The United States staged a hugely successful 15th FIFA World Cup that became the best attended in history and ended with Brazil celebrating their first world title since 1970. Forwards Romario and Bebeto were the Brazilians' star performers while Roberto Baggio shone equally brightly for Italy despite his penalty miss that concluded the first ever Final shoot-out. While Sweden finished third, the undoubted surprise package were their fellow semi-finalists Bulgaria.

The Spectacular Stadiums of the 2010 FIFA World Cup
Image : http://www.flickr.com
The 2010 FIFA World Cup matches will be played in stadiums all over South Africa, some of which are being specially built for the tournament. Here is an informational breakdown about the spectacular venues that will host some of the most exciting and talented soccer players from every corner of the globe in June and July of 2010.
Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
On the beautiful shores of the North End Lake in Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth lies the newly constructed Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The construction crews working on the venue knew it had to be completed in time for the World Cup but they actually finished almost a year ahead of schedule and the stadium is already in use. The playing field of this multipurpose center has a central natural grass pitch surrounded by areas of artificial turf. Its unique domed roof only adds to the beautiful view of the lake as seen from the shore. Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will host a total of eight World Cup matches including one of the quarter finals and the third place playoff game.
Green Point Stadium
The architectural splendor of the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town is nothing short of breathtaking. This is another of the stadiums that are being especially built for the FIFA 2010 World Cup, but long after the soccer stars leave town city officials intend for it to become the new Mecca for all kinds of Cape Town entertainment events; everything from soccer to opera. The outside of the stadium has been constructed using noise reducing cladding and can sit up to 70,000 spectators at any given time. Green Point Stadium will be the venue for one of the two World Cup semi finals that will be played in July of 2010.
Moses Mabhida Stadium
The other semi final will be held at the spectacular Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. This stadium, which is scheduled to be completed by December of 2009, is a testament to the sheer ingenuity of South African architecture. Its shape is inspired by the South African flag itself and when complete it will even feature a cable car that will ascend to the top of the expansive 1148 foot high arch, allowing visitors a spectacular view of the lively city down below. The stadium's namesake was a poor farm boy who went on to engineer and develop the armed wing of the ANC, which was known as the Umkhonto we Sizwe, and played a key role in the end of apartheid in his homeland.
Ellis Park Stadium
Ellis Park Stadium, located in the heart of Johannesburg, is not a new facility, although it is underwent a significant renovation before playing host to the 2009 Confederations Cup Final showdown between Brazil and the USA. The largest piece of new construction was the addition of a new tier of seating at the north end which increased the seating capacity to 62,000. A brand new natural grass pitch has also been installed and a state of the art audio visual system installed to ensure every fan gets the best possible match experience.
Soccer City Stadium
Both the first and the most anticipated game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the final, will be played at the iconic Soccer City Stadium, also located in Johannesburg. Although newly renovated, the Soccer City Stadium has already been the site of numerous historic moments in time. It was there that Nelson Mandela held his first public rally after being freed from prison in 1990 and thousands gathered again in 1993 to mourn the assassination of Chris Hani, the charismatic man who followed in Nelson Mandela's footsteps as leader of the ANC. The venue can accommodate an astonishing 94,700 spectators and its overall design is fashioned after a traditional South African pot called the calabash. When lit at night, the stadium is a jewel in the Johannesburg skyline.
Free State Stadium.
Free State Stadium is home to the Bloemfontein Celtic soccer team, whose fans are renowned the world over for being some of the most loyal a team could desire. Located in Mangaung / Bloemfontein, a quiet open city, the stadium has already been the venue for a huge recent soccer upset when it hosted the semi final game of the Confederations Cup in 2009 that saw the USA send European champions Spain packing in front of a capacity crowd. The Free State Stadium underwent a full renovation before the Confederations Cup that added 7,000 seats to bring its seating capacity up to 45,000.
Mbombela Stadium
Mbombela Staduim, located in Nelspruit, a city which is a part of the famous Kruger National Park, is another new construction that was commissioned especially to host World Cup 2010 games. Mbombela is the name of the municipality of which Nelspruit is a part and translated from SiSawti, one the 11 languages officially spoken in South Africa,it means "many people together in a small space." The construction of the stadium was especially welcomed by the citizens of this beautiful area, as prior to its existence there was no real top class venue available to host international events of any kind.
Peter Mokaba Stadium
Named after its most famous son Peter Mokaba, who was a force to be reckoned with during the struggle to end apartheid, the city of Polokwane's brand new stadium is built next to the site of the old Peter Mokaba Staduim where former African player of the year and current Chelsea soccer superstar Didier Drogba made his debut for the Côte d'Ivoire national team. The new stadium was envisioned by its architects to resemble the local natural icon the Baobab tree, as its steel structures will form "trunks" to support the jutting roof planes.
Royal Bafokeng Stadium
The Royal Bafokeng Stadium was first built in 1999, but is undergoing a considerable facelift prior to its hosting duties for the 2010 World Cup matches. Seating 42,000 it is named for the people of the area, the Bafokeng. Although the town of Rustenberg, where it is located, has no soccer team to call its own at this time it has been the site of numerous Premier Soccer league games and was the stadium where the then fledgling South African soccer team beat Bakino Faso 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying game in 2001.
Loftus Versfeld Stadium
The Loftus Versfeld Stadium is one of the oldest sports facilitates in South Africa. Originally constructed in 1903 it has undergone a great many renovations over the decades. It is located in the beautiful Tshwane/Pretoria area, which is a spectacular blend of old and new architecture that reflects the areas diverse heritage. When it was first built as a wooden structure the Loftus Versfeld Stadium could accommodate a mere 2,000 spectators. Its capacity for the 2010 World Cup will be 50,000.
The people of South Africa are hoping that by hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2010 they can showcase their beautiful country to peoples of the world who know very little about it, as well as prove that the country truly desires to become a world soccer force to be reckoned with. To that end thousands of construction workers have been working night and day to ensure that all the stadiums die to host World Cup matches will be in perfect condition to do so.
To recognize this effort FIFA announced a few months ago that they will be giving away 20,000 free tickets to the men and women who are working so hard to make sure that the FIFA 2010 World Cup is a resounding success.

Where Can I Buy the Jabulani Official Soccer Ball?
Thursday, July 29, 2010
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Jabulani is the Official Ball of the World Cup 2010 in South Africa and it is already one of the most sought after soccer balls in the history of the game. Maybe, this is because more interest has been generated for the 2010 World Cup Match than any other FIFA World Cup in history, but I think it's because the Jabulani looks so exotic, so African and also, it is a new kind of soccer ball for fans and players alike. The Adidas Company designed this 2010 World Cup ball, as they do for every World Cup and they have really raised the bar for football technology and style with this latest new soccer ball.
The 2010 World Cup Official Match Ball from Adidas is being sold all over the world, mostly online, though some soccer shops carry one or two. You can buy an official or replica Jabulani ball at online World Cup Souvenir Shops where you can have your ball shipped to you anywhere you are. The best deal on an official size 5 Jabulani can be found at online World Cup Football Shops right now for as low as $59.00 US! This is a way lower price than the official Adidas Site which is selling the ball for $150.00! Shipping costs will depend on where you want your ball sent. If you want to spend less money, consider buying a replica Jabulani, available in size 5, 4 & 3 for practicing, teams, & kids collections. The replica Jabulani sells for as low as $18.99 and looks virtually identical to the official ball.
Jabulani means "to party on or celebrate" in the Zulu language, which represents one of the many tribal cultures of South Africa. The design contains 11 different colors in an African styled woven elliptical pattern that spiral around the ball on a shiny white background. The 11 colors used on the weave grpahic are symbolic of the 11 players on each team, the 11 official & tribal languages spoken in South Africa, and the fact that the Jabulani is the 11th Adidas World Cup Match Ball. For a sports ball, this one is total eye candy and sometimes I find myself enjoying watching the ball as much as the players! So gorgeous, so cool; only to be kicked around the world by hundreds of the strongest football players and possibly millions of aspiring fans and future soccer stars. You would think that it would not even matter WHAT the soccer ball looked like; It's who wins the match that counts, right? Well maybe not entirely! The Jabulani soccer ball, designed for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer event is just so beautiful to look at, that everyone wants one, even non-soccer fans. Adidas designs a different official ball for every World Cup and many fans around the world collect them, keep them in special display cases or original packaging to retain the ball's mint condition. This fan behavior can finally be comprehended now that such a looker of a ball has been released.
The new technology that makes the Jabulani ball different are; the air and traction grooves that are moulded into the surface are designed to provide increased grip & control, but they may be responsible for the extra flightiness and trajectory spin as well. The jabulani apparently has a more perfectly spherical overall shape that was supposed to have provide greater shot accuracy but we do not see that playing out on the pitch just yet. I wonder if all the players had enough time to practice with the new ball? The other new technology used to create the Jabulani is that it is put together with only 8 panels that are seamlessly molded and thermally bonded. NO stitches to interfere with the balls spinning motion. The Jabulani really does spin like a dervish, you can actually see the difference when you watch it flying across the stadium on those long long passes.
Though there has been lots of the usual grousing & complaining about the Jabulani from some players, it really is the coolest soccer ball ever. It goes faster and has trajectory differences that are creating a little leeway in the game that means that the players need to perfect some twisted new spinning skills. Scoring has been on the low side so far in the World Cup tournament and perhaps the Jabulani is making it more challenging for the scorers to control the ball at longer distances. Obviously, the ball presents challenges for the goal keepers as well as it is more difficult to get an exact read on where the heck the Jabulani is going next on a long shot. Just wait until there's wind! Some players have noted that it is too light and moves like a beach ball! Ouch!
After the first few days of matches, it looks like the players are getting a grip on the new type of ball; there has been improvement already as the matches roll out and the ball is in play more. There is no changing the official ball once the World Cup has started so players will just have to adjust. Every player will have the same adjustment to make, so the playing field is level even it it does present a few new twists in how to play the ball. These are the very best soccer players on earth and they are quite capable of understanding and acting on any small changes in the ball. Weather always has a fairly profound effect on the ball anyway and players have had to adapt to these differences in ball motion due to temperature and altitude since the game began.
The Jabulani is now the most well known ball by name in the history of World Cup Match Balls; most soccer fans cannot even name any other ball. This one is very special and will long be remembered for its beauty, street cool and controversy much like the African continent itself. Congrats to the Adidas company for a great design and interesting interpretation of African culture.

Manchester United the Global Brand and Club History
Manchester United are from a neutral perspective the cream of English football. Unlike some of their closest rivals they are a worldwide brand. This is something that Chelsea owner Roman Abromovich is trying to achieve. They are based at Old Trafford in Manchester otherwise known as 'The Theatre of Dreams' which is one of the biggest stadiums in the country and also Europe. Manchester United play in red and have acquired the nickname 'Red Devils' as a result. Manchester United are said to have around 300 million supporters worldwide which accounts for roughly 5% of the global population. It is estimated that 95% of Manchester United supporters have never been to Old Trafford. They are rumoured to be the richest club in existence.
Manchester United football club have an absolutely staggering amount of trophies and silverware to their name. They have won no fewer than 5 European trophies which includes one international cup, one European super cup, two European champions cups, and one cup winners cup. Domestically the side has a truly remarkable record too claiming 12 domestic cups and 16 Premier League trophies. Few sides in history can be proud of such a record. The club is managed by Sir Alex Ferguson who is considered to be one of the best managers in today's game. United fans would not want to see anyone else at the helm of their pride and joy.
Manchester United are currently owned by American businessman Malcolm Glazer. Glazer made investments in the club back in 2005 but it took him a further year until he has able to gain ownership. He is estimated to have paid a massive $1.47 billion to get his hands on the squad. Glazer had to win the approval of both the directors of Manchester United and even more difficult the fans. He had a difficult time with the directors as the deal is said to have made Manchester United $850 million poorer but an even tougher job with the fans. Fans do not want to see their team in the hands of a tycoon and were fearful of the future under Malcolm Glazer. Initially many fans protested by not renewing their season tickets and songs about Glazer can still be heard today around the stands.
Today the club seems to be moving forward faster than it has ever done before. In 2006/2007 season Manchester United reclaimed the Premier League title from their arch rivals Chelsea and in 2008/2009 won both the Premiership title and also the UEFA Champions League. The fan base is growing at an alarming rate and thanks partly to the fortunes and developments of Malcolm Glazer the club can bring in some of the best players on the world stage. It is thought that for the foreseeable future Manchester United will remain one of the greatest names in world football.

Soccer Tips - How to Tackle Explained
Wednesday, July 28, 2010
For every goal kicker who thinks he is the new Maradona, there are even more whose sole job is to kill your dreams of scoring that match winning goal.
A defender who can who can tackle and start a counter attack is every way as valuable as a match winning striker.
There are general rules that apply to tackling. One of the most important is timing. How to tackle and when to do it. Many a young defender has found it difficult to hold themselves back when confronted with an opponent screaming into goal. And a smart forward knows this is the case and will exploit this to the full, by just dribbling around easily, whilst the tackler falls down in a heap.
The next time you watch the professionals play, watch and learn how the top defenders respond once a forward is in there space. In a lot of cases they will move backwards to give themselves space between there opponent. And you will see them move slightly side on as they move backwards. This gives them the chance to spin around and sprint back if the forward tries to go around them with speed.
This side on stace allows a defender to turn much quicker than if they are face to face with there opponent. Something else that is very important with this technique or called 'standing off' is that allows you to stay on your feet. Nothing excites are goal striker than to see a flat footed defender that has fallen to the ground helpless! Especially in junior football, 'standing off' is a great technique to use against inexperienced players.
By letting your opponent see that you are ready to take them on is sometimes enough to pressure them into error. Again it all comes down to practice makes perfect. Practice this with your friends or at training and it will all become second nature to any up and coming young player.

Is it Safe For Kids to Play Soccer?
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Children want to play soccer, but is it safe? You must ask yourself a few questions. Safer than what? Safer than not having physical activity in their life? Safer than them falling off of their bike? Safer than them tripping over their shoe lace falling on their way to school? Safer than them not learning skills to work as a team? All children are going to, at some point, get hurt. It is impossible to avoid that, so you really need to decide if the pros of allowing them to play soccer, outweigh the cons.
Soccer teaches children to work as a team, achieve goals and maintain good sportsmanship. Soccer is an outstanding form of physical activity and yet it is fun for them at the same time. Physical activity in children is just as important as adults and getting active early will help them to stay active later in life. Remaining in good shape is important to their health growing up.
Children have fun playing soccer and learn a different form of social skill. It allows them to make friends with other children that want to do more than watch television. Soccer is an unpredictable sport which teaches them quick thinking, problem solving and self motivation.
It is important however that parents really take the time to interview and pick a coach that wants their team to learn skills and have fun; not just have a "win or else" mentality. Coaches should encourage parental involvement, not over train and never judge skill by perfection standards. A child's value should never be judged by their performance, nor should they ever feel that it is.
Your child will need proper equipment to remain safe during the game. A good pair of cleats is important for traction. Shin guards must be worn at all times. They protect the leg from broken bones as well as bruises. Mouth guards are optional but they do help to prevent dental injuries. They do however, interfere with verbal communication which is why not many children choose to wear them. You should also buy a ball for your child to practice with that is a size that is appropriate for them.
A very important part of soccer is the soccer goals and making sure your child is playing with safe goals is a crucial one. There has been over 30 deaths since 1979 associated with soccer goals, although it is not a very large number, it is still a statistic that could have been avoided. Movable soccer goals should only be used on a level playing field and they should be anchored at all times. The nets should be removed when not in use and these should be taken down for seasonable storage. Soccer goals can fall over on children. It is rare, but it is possible.
It is important for your child to be active and make friends and although there is always a risk of injury, there can be an equal opportunity of risk doing something else. Soccer is a great sport for children to play.

2010 World Cup Packages to South Africa
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Though the event is due to be broadcast live in 3D for the first time, there is nothing like being up close and personal with the world's greatest football show. As such, it could well be time to take advantage of one of the 2010 World Cup packages that are available.
The World Cup coming to the African continent for the first time in the competition's history is hugely exciting and, no matter what team you are supporting, there are packages to suit. Though the football is all important of course, they also give you a great opportunity to explore the wonder South African country and culture.
The packages available across the internet are many and varied, but they all tend to follow to the same sort of routine. They will include all flights and quite often transfers if needed, will cover accommodation and have a host for the duration of the stay. Most importantly of all of course, they will include the ticket to the match of your choice.
This is for the most basic of packages of course, for just the one match at the group stage. There are more 2010 World Cup packages available of course; going right from the start to the final, but the cost will obviously rise considerably.
There may also be restrictions on certain packages, depending upon what country you are booking from and which matches you are wanting to see. FIFA have put tough restrictions on the sale of match tickets for this event, so freedom of selecting matches cannot always be guaranteed.
Many of the top packages available also include fantastic excursions in areas of interest local to the stadia where the match is due to play. One of the most popular types are those that include safaris in the amazing parks. However, for a real treat, seeing the morning migration of wildebeest from a hot air balloon is something not to be missed.
Booking of the 2010 World Cup Packages can be done quite easily, with many operators. However, such are the restrictions; the process can take a little time. There is a crackdown on ticket touting in this year's completion, so identities will need to be verified.
Prices are quite high of course, but do vary from package to package of course. However, they do offer what will for most be a once in a lifetime opportunity, and a chance to really soak up the atmosphere of one of the best sporting events the world hosts.
When looking online, though it will be tempting to look for the cheapest available, caution should certainly be exercised. Though tighter rules exist over ticket allocation, there are no guarantees that they will stop all confidence tricksters of course. As such, it is wise to go with a name you know, or have certainly heard about.
Booking your 2010 World Cup Packages with a reputable operator, that is accredited and protected within your own country will not just make for a safe and pleasant trip; but allow you to enjoy all the action without worry.

Business Lessons From the Soccer World Cup
Friday, July 23, 2010
Image : http://www.flickr.com
OK, let's talk about the World Cup. If anyone got up early on Monday morning to watch the match between Australia and Germany, you no doubt walked away disappointed with the end result. But full credit to the German team - they really were brilliant and obviously the deserving winners. Today I am not here to talk about Italy and Australia - I am here to talk about something I heard in the game between Greece and Korea.
Now my wife is Greek, so even though she shows very little interest in the soccer, I thought it was my duty to also watch the last half of that game. Unfortunately, Greece lost 2-0. And here's what's interesting: at half-time I was listening to the commentators and they said something which I found interesting...
"Korea is playing to win whereas Greece is playing to not lose" And that's a fine distinction, isn't it? After all, how many of us play the game of business just to stay in business... just to survive? It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking small rather than thinking big. It's easy to think of break even rather than how you are going to build an empire. It's easy to avoid risk rather than take calculated risks which allow you to take your business to the next level. But what happens when we do that? It's really quite simple.
Think of it like a soccer game. If you don't take your chances... if you don't implement some aggressive strategies... and if you are always thinking about defence... Somehow the enemy manages to slip through your defence and all of a sudden you are heading for a loss which kicks you out of the tournament. By the same token, in business you might lose a client or an ad might stop working. You might lose a staff member. Many things can go wrong. In fact, we shouldn't be surprised when they do...
Even though we should at the same time be focusing on what we want and thinking positive. You need to stay ahead of the game. Here's how it works... "Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you'd better be running"
So take a moment right now to decide to stay ahead of the game... and play in your business with an attacking game plan. Interestingly enough, in Keith McFarland's book, The Breakthrough Company about how everyday companies become extraordinary performers he says this is one of the most important aspects to breaking through to the next level: Being willing to take calculated risks. Anyway, time to start running.

2010 World Cup Travel Guide
Tuesday, July 20, 2010
Image : http://www.flickr.com
The 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa. As such, thousands of avid football fans will flock down to this intriguing country; while sporting events will obviously be taking the spotlight, there will be plenty of other things to see and do in the various cities where they will take place. If you're planning to come down to South Africa to attend the 2010 World Cup, it helps to familiarise yourself with the cities in which some of the top events will occur. That way, you'll never be left with nothing to do.
Johannesburg
Known affectionately as Jo'burg to locals, Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and will play host to many key 2010 World Cup events. If you've never been here, you're in for a real treat - and there's no doubt that Johannesburg will be rolling out the red carpet for the many people who will be flocking here. Soccer City and Ellis Park are the two venues where football matches will be happening, but you should make a point of getting out into the city to see a few of its key sights as well.
Hit the Top of Africa at the Carlton Centre to take in a stunning, panoramic view of Johannesburg. If you're in the mood for a bit of nature, head over to the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens where many prime example of local flora - and plant life from elsewhere in the world - are on display. Soak up a bit of South African culture by paying a visit to the Lesedi Cultural Village; native dances and other interesting displays make this a worthwhile spot. Finally, gold mines are abundant in South Africa and there are plenty near Johannesburg; take a tour of one to learn a bit more about the economy of this captivating part of the world.
Cape Town
Cape Town's African Renaissance Stadium is another one of the major venues for the World Cup in 2010; if you plan on attending any of the games, you should also make it a point to get to know this lovely city a bit more as well. Located in the southwestern part of South Africa, Cape Town is its second-largest city and is the capital of its Western Cape Province. This cosmopolitan city is bursting at its seams with excellent things to see and do, as well as plenty of topnotch dining and shopping opportunities.
You can't visit Cape Town without heading over to Table Mountain. There is a spectacular cable car that you can take to the top; if you're feeling active and are in decent shape, a hike to the top is always fun on a nice day. From its summit, Table Mountain offers wonderful views of the city. Swimming over at the False Bay side of the peninsula is always a great idea, or you can soak up a bit of history and culture at the Castle Of Good Hope. However you spend your time, you're sure to enjoy your stay in Cape Town.
Port Elizabeth
Locals call Port Elizabeth P.E., so if you want to fit in you should do so as well. The city's Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is another of the major stadia hosting pivotal games during the 2010; so if you're coming here for the World Cup then you'll be spending plenty of time there. This Indian Coast city has plenty of things to offer tourists and travellers though, so be prepared for a holiday that is chock full of sightseeing opportunities.
There is plenty to see and do in Port Elizabeth. Scuba diving is a very popular activity in and around Port Elizabeth. Head over to Penguin Island for some excellent penguin watching, or take a boat tour to try and see some whales. The African Dawn Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary is another nice place to spend an afternoon while in Port Elizabeth. Beaches are also plentiful in the region; if you have any time to kill when you're here for the World Cup, set aside a few hours to soak up the sun at one of Port Elizabeth's nearby beaches. Without a doubt, Port Elizabeth is an outdoor enthusiast's dream come true and is a delight to visit.

To be selected for a ball such world-class competition, it must meet several requirements. The company works started up soccer balls in 1963 and now Adidas is a leading company in their production. Winner this year is Jabulani, the new Soccer ball World cup 2010.
Tests were conducted at The Adidas Innovation Team (A.I.T) of the most rigid laboratory conditions. Then was given and the club teams and professional players to try out the playing field. One of the leading institutions in the world - the Sports Technology Research Group of the University of Loughborough have also conducted research. All tests carried out proved that Jabulani Adidas has a stable flight and is more round than any other ball in various competitions.
Quality criteria, which was built by FIFA, ensuring the highest standard of the best players in the most popular sporting event. All tests carried out by Loughborough University and Adidas football laboratory in Scheinfeld prove that Soccer Ball World Cup 2010 not only meets, and is much better than all the criteria! The tests that were made are: Circumference Test, Water Absorption Test, Permanent Roundness Test. All of them, the Soccer ball World cup 2010 meets the world level!
Circumference Test: In order to achieve optimum results in keeping or dribble to calculate the average circumference of each ball, as measured in 10 different points.
* FIFA-Approved Standard: 68.5 cm - 69.5 cm
* Adidas Jabulani: 69,0 cm (+/- 0,2 cm)
Water Absorption Test: If a ball is heavy and wet, the conduct of the football field is totally different from a dry one. Low bounce, dribble hard and fly slowly. The new patented technology for thermal bonding makes the Soccer ball World cup 2010 almost impermeable. For the water absorption test, it will be placed in a container with water. Basic Rules For Soccer Players
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Basic soccer rules originated in England (1815), and were refined in 1863, as the game gained popularity and as people began to have more recreational time. Soccer today, known in most of the world outside the U.S. as "Association Football", is one of the most popular Olympic sports, with its own World Cup games that outdraw even the Olympics by multiples. It has invaded the home living room through television and video games.
Basic soccer rules are for adults, with modifications for youth games. It can be played indoors or outdoors, and on different size fields as long as they are rectangular. A regulation soccer pitch is between 90 and 120 meters long and 45 to 90 meters wide. Referees regulate the play, call fouls and time-outs, stop the game, and enforce rules. There is one referee with two assistants. A fourth may be added for high level games. They are the only people who can call stoppages or injury time outs. Team managers direct team play formations and strategy.
Soccer teams consist of two teams with 11 players each. The minimum number of players is 7. Players must wear shirts, socks, shorts, footwear and shin guards. Headgear is optional. Jewelry is not allowed due to potential for injuries. The goalkeepers wear easily distinguishable clothing that is unlike that of other players or officials.
The goal of soccer is to win by scoring the most goals. Ties are settled with extra time, penalty shootouts, or called a draw. There are specifications for the single leather covered round soccer ball. Games begin with a kickoff from the center spot by one team. Should play become stopped, there are approved methods for restarting ball action: thrown in, goal kick, corner kick, indirect free kick, direct free kick, penalty kick, and dropped-ball.
Basic soccer rules call for two periods of fifteen minutes each, with a fifteen minute break. Extra time is two 15 minute periods. Misconduct fouls result in a yellow caution card or red sending-off card. Players sent off may not return and the team will not get a replacement. The most complex law is offside, which limits the ability of the forward to remain ahead of the ball, the second to last defense player, and the half-way line.
For players, moving the ball without using arms or hands is the primary rule. Only goalkeepers may use hands or arms to move the ball, and only when they are within their own penalty area by the goal. Players may use feet, and occasionally head or torso. They can move the ball by dribbling, or passing to teammates to score. Opponents get possession of the ball by tacking or intercepting passes. Each team has 10 outfield players and 1 goalkeeper. Strikers attempt to score goals; Defenders try to keep the opponent from scoring; Midfielders try to intercept and control the ball. They can switch positions at will. Substitutions can be made three times, however the substituted player may not return in that game.

Wear the Correct Outdoor Footwear For Your Chosen Activity
Saturday, July 17, 2010
My very first (and painful) experience of walking boots was a school trip when I was about 10 years old. We were staying in Claughton near Scarborough, a very pretty place with many acres of fields and scenic footpaths perfect for walking. Part of the daily routine was a lovely countryside walk. Off we set with our rucksack, waterproofs and our boots on. The teachers, a little over excited about our trip, dragged us through field after field in the rain hoping to catch a glimpse of some bird or insect that we could write about later that day. Unfortunately later that first day the only thing I wanted to do was go home.
Peeling my socks off my poor feet I found that I had more blisters than I had toes. Crying became a regular bedtime event. Don't get me wrong, I love the countryside. There is nothing I love more than walking my dog in the woods. My point is that to enjoy being in the great outdoors you must have the right footwear and more importantly they must fit your feet correctly. Going back to my school trip my boots were stiff, uncomfortable, didn't fit my feet and they leaked! This early experience was enough to put me off walking boots for life. That was until I started working for an outdoors company that specialize in outdoor footwear. There I was surrounded by pair after pair, cringing at the thought of some poor soul out on the hills; they're boots rubbing against their feet making their day seem like a night mare. I soon came to realize that things had changed since my school days. Walking boots had evolved!
Now they are made from fabric that stays dry and the soles are designed to move with your feet. They are breathable and lightweight offering comfort and performance. These walking boots were miles away from the stiff, uncomfortable lead weights I'd had to wear. Footwear manufacturers had realized that men move differently to women. Women's walking boots offer a slimmer fit and the boots direct a woman's stride into a more fluid, balanced process that results in extended comfort.
There are also different types of footwear for different activities. We now have hiking boots that are snug in the heel and precise over the instep to keep feet from sliding forward giving plenty of toe room that enables you to wear a decent hiking sock with them. The full athletic boot gives a close to the foot fit with more volume in the instep. Sport sandals are designed to give you freedom of movement in warmer weather. Multi activity footwear allows you to carry out daily tasks without changing your footwear. Smart enough for the office, giving you comfort for the walk home and offering performance for your chosen activity all in one. They are a great choice for the active outdoors enthusiast.
The insole in the boot is what helps stabilize the foot. The harder the activity, the harder the insole. Heavy duty backpacking boots use a stiffer more stable insole than a day hiking boot which has a stiffer insole than a multi activity shoe. The footbed varies from boot to boot. These are what provide feet with support and protection.
There is footwear available now to suit every activity and every terrain. Boots and shoes are made to grip, be safe and comfortable allowing you to move with ease. Footwear manufacturers continue to develop and improve their products meaning you can spend the whole day on your feet and still feel good.
If you are wondering, yes I do now own a pair of walking boots. They are comfortable, fit well and are much loved. Most importantly at the end of a day's walking I come home smiling, even if I did get wet!
Soccer Or Basketball - World Cup Sweets Will Do
I was never really fond of soccer. I viewed it as a funny game since your hand can't touch the ball. I was accustomed to watching basketball since the NBA was so popular. I watch it with world cup sweets in my mouth. Not until now that I realize what the candy actually stands for. It was more fit for a soccer fan and not a basketball fan.
My first encounter with it was with my two cousins. They are studying in an international school and soccer was the most popular sport. They invited me to see one of their practice games and I came to watch with my favorite world cup sweets. I then learned my soccer 101.
Unlike basketball with 5 players, soccer has 11 and is played in the field. In basketball the players have to shoot the ball in the ring while soccer players need to get the ball into the other team's goal to score points.Basketball players are either power forwards, small forwards, shooting guards, point guards or centers. Soccer players are strikers whose main task is to score goals. Defenders who specialise in preventing their opponents from scoring. Or they are midfielders who dispossess the opposition and keep possession of the ball in order to pass it to the forwards on their team. It took time for me to read and about these things but world cup sweets keep me and my sweet tooth happy during those times.
My favorite soccer movie is Shaolin Soccer written and directed by Stephen Chow. It was a very touching story of friendship, principles and winning. Chow and his brothers have to beat the nasty and cheating coach of the Team Evil which gave Fung (Ng Mat Tat) a limp. Although the effects and stunts are very unbelievable and quite astounding, it's still my favorite soccer movie so far. Yummy world cup sweets kept me more alive and happy every time I watch this movie.
What kept me glued to soccer is the spirit of unity that fans show during the games. Countries unite just to support their soccer teams. Families and friends bond and even enemies unite for a common goal. Just like me being united with my world cup sweets while watching these exciting games.
This year, the 19th FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place between 11 June and 11 July 2010 in South Africa. This will be the first time that the tournament will be hosted by an African Nation.

KU Basketball Retired Jersey Numbers
Image : http://www.flickr.com
KU basketball has so many retired jerseys that the numbers are not actually retired, instead only the particular jerseys are enshrined while current players recycle the famous numbers. If it were not for this process of reusing numbers after the corresponding jerseys have been retired a program steeped in as much tradition as the University of Kansas would run the risk of actually running out of numbers to outfit their current roster.
The program which played its first season in the nineteenth century (1898) under head coach Doctor James Naismith (the inventor of the game of basketball) has experienced such tremendous success over the years that as of February, 2010 twenty-six (26) jerseys have been retired. While individually going through and scrutinizing every single retired jersey is beyond the scope of this article it is accurate to say that the gambit of enshrined jerseys spans from the curious number 0 (Doc Gooden) to number 60 (Max Falkenstein - a radio announcer). Max Falkstein holds the honor of being the only non-player on the list of retired jersey numbers. Mr. Falkstein, a 1948 graduate of KU, is credited with founding the KU Sports Network and serving an illustrious sixty year career (hence the retired number 60) behind a microphone where he covered over 1,750 basketball games and 650 football games - all for Kansas. Each of the retired jerseys hangs proudly in the Lawrence, Kansas basketball arena known as Allen Field House (named after famed former head coach "Phog" Allen).
The two names that are generally considered to be the best known amongst the list of retired KU basketball jersey numbers are those of Wilt Chamberlain (13) and Paul Pierce (34). Pierce is currently a star player and NBA Champion for the historic Boston Celtics NBA franchise. Wilt Chamberlain is widely considered to be the best basketball player in the history of the game. Even fans that argue that Chamberlain did not win the championships that Bill Russell did or have the athleticism of Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant can agree that Wilt Chamberlain personally dominated an era unlike anyone else has ever done.
While the parameters for having jerseys retired vary from team to team and from sport to sport the guidelines at KU are actually pretty straightforward. The test generally involves accomplishing at least one of the following achievements:
Being named National Players of the Year by either the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the Associated Press (AP), or the Sporting News
Being the winning recipient of either the John R. Wooden Award, Naismith College Player of Year, or the Oscar Robertson Trophy
Being named as a consensus All-American, the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Big 12 Conference Player of the Year, Academic All-American of the Year,or a two-time first team All-American.
These guidelines are just that -guidelines. While these metrics serve as the general prerequisites they are by no means carved in stone and are subject to the discretion of the University of Kansas administration.
Given the pace of KU basketball retired jersey numbers and the rule that current players can wear retired jersey numbers there is a decent chance that sometime in the coming years the University of Kansas will have to deal with having the same jersey number retired by two different players.

Mayday Parade- I'd Hate To Be You When People Find Out What This Song Is About (lyrics)
~READ HERE!!!~ hey!! I'm spending my Thanksgiving break making youtube videos for all my viewers! This song is by: Mayday Parade Song: I'd Hate To Be You When People Find Out What This Song Is About Lyrics: And we both go down together We'd stay there forever Just try to get up And I'm sorry This wasn't easy When I asked you, believe me And never let go Well I'm thinking of the worst things That I could say to you But a promise doesn't mean A thing anymore And this never will be right with me And now you're trying to desperately But I'm tongue tied And terrified of what I'll say And then we both go down together We may stay there forever I'll just try to get up And I'm sorry This wasn't easy When I asked you, believe me You never let go... But i let go I could only sing you sad songs And you could sing along And you could see the melody That's been calling out your wrongs And this never will be right with me And now you're trying to desperately But I'm tongue tied And terrified of what I'll say But I never told you everything I'm losing hope and fading dreams And every single memory along the way And then we both go down together We may stay there forever I'll just try to get up And i'm sorry This wasn't easy When i asked you, believe me You never let go... But i let go And we both go down together And stay there forever Just try to get up And then we both go down together We may stay there forever I'll just try to get up And i'm sorry This wasn't easy When i asked you ...

Hiring Great Trade Show Display Staff
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Your trade show display is only as effective as the people you have staffing it. There are many different options for staffing trade show exhibits, and all of them have particular benefits and drawbacks. Who you decide to hire will ultimately be determined by finances, but considering these points will ensure your hiring dollars are as well spent as possible.
Staffing Needs For Trade Show Exhibits
The key to being a good staff member is a combination of knowledge about the items being showcased and the enthusiasm and outgoing nature that will draw in visitors. The most knowledgeable employee is useless if he cannot communicate that knowledge effectively. Like a bad college professor, he can speak for a long time and put your visitors to sleep - not the result that you're looking for!
Instead, choose your staff for their enthusiasm first. People who are truly enthusiastic will easily learn the facts about the products simply because they are interested. Even better, you may be able to find interested and animated people on your team who already know everything about the product.
Cater To The Expected Crowd
Like the design of a booth, the type of staff chosen should also depend upon the audience that you are expecting. If you are presenting at a conference that is equal parts academic and commercial, then it might be wise to send some of your company's brightest developers, even if they are lacking the generally desirable trait of enthusiasm.
Remember that a company representative working on development may not be able to explain the product well to an inexperienced or non-trade crowd. If you expect to encounter only other trade-experienced visitors, then someone who speaks your trade language is ideal. But if the concept needs to be explained to non-trade visitors, you'll need people who understand the concept and can translate it.
Hire Trade Show Display Staff Or Recruit From Within Your Company?
Ultimately, you will be able to find a good staff for your trade show exhibits whether you choose them from within your company or not. The decision should rest on the number of people within your company, their comfort with public speaking and crowds, and the technicality of what will be presented. If your product is something that doesn't require a lot of knowledge to explain, than a professional trade show display presenter is always the best choice. If the product is complex, then outgoing employees may be your best alternative.
The Possibility Of Combining Professionals And Your Own Staff
One of the newest trends in trade show display staffing is to combine your own employees with hired professionals. The main advantage of professionals is that they know how to draw new leads to trade show exhibits and therefore will be a better choice for drawing pure volume into your booth. However, in terms of actually describing products and making a sale, your own employees will certainly be more knowledgeable. Many exhibits are taking advantage of this difference to create a division of labor between the two workforces. The company's employees stay more in the center of the trade show display, while the hired staffers will work along the outside to bring new people into the exhibit.

How To Fill In A Blank Sudoku Puzzle Grid
Image : http://www.flickr.com
So, you have decided to play sudoku, but you've been staring at a blank sudoku grid for a few minutes, unsure what to do or where to start. A sudoku grid is comprised of a 9x9 grid with 9 slots in each row further broken down into 3x3 areas to be filled with the numbers 1-9. In some of the slots, numbers have already been provided. These numbers cannot be changed or moved in any way. Now, you need to determine which numbers go into which "slot". This is a popular game in Japan, which is where its' name originated.
In a sudoku grid, you have to make note of the numbers already provided and then fill in the empty slots with the numbers 1-9. However, you cannot duplicate the numbers in each row, column or area. Looking at a blank sudoku grid may seem intimidating, but with patience it will soon be filled with numbers. There are millions upon millions of solutions available to you when filling in a blank sudoku grid, so whatever you come up with, as long as you've followed the rules, you'll be correct. The rules really are simple as I have outlined here. I myself have tried Sudoku, which can be found on most magazine racks, and found the game somewhat challenging.
A sudoku grid can be played anywhere, anytime by anyone ages 8 through 80. You don't have to be a MENSA member to play. There is no math involved, only patience, time and concentration. You can download blank sudoku grids online, or go to the bookstore and buy a whole book of them. Blank sudoku grids can be easy or they can be complicated. It depends on your skill level and where you want to start. Don't underestimate the amount of concentration that the games demand. This is key to finishing a grid the fastest when in competition.
Sudoku grids are also great to use on rainy days with the kids or on game night with the whole family. Anyone can play--that's the great thing about it. With so many different combinations to solve the puzzle, you can let everyone do their own and see where the differences are, or who gets done first. So, download a blank sudoku grid today and see what the hype is all about. You won't be disappointed. In fact you will find it somewhat challenging! Give it a try then get the family involved for a little friendly family competition.

How to Play the Golf Chip Shot Like the Pros - Learn the Secrets That Get You Up & Down Every Time!
Monday, July 12, 2010
Image : http://www.flickr.com
If you want to really start improving your golf score and taking strokes off your handicap then becoming proficient in your pitching and chipping is vital. This is the one part of the game often overlooked by beginners and amateurs as they tend to focus on the longer part of the game. You can literally save yourself anywhere from 4 - 6 shots a round just by improving your golf chip shots from around the greens.
The same principle applies to another area I have spoken about to hitting solid iron shots. This is the same reason why most golfers go wrong around the greens. The key principle in hitting any solid iron shot whether it is a full blooded long iron or a golf chip shot from the edge of the green is this: You MUST hit down on the golf ball always and let the club head do the work to move the golf ball forward.
Most golfers when attempting to chip the golf ball from just off the green try and 'lift' or 'scoop' up on the ball to get it into the air and onto the green close to the pin. What happens more often than not is this lifting up motion causes the blade of the iron (bottom part of the face) to make contact with the golf ball instead of the sweet spot. The result is usually a thinned or knifed shot that goes racing through the back of the green or sometimes a fat shot that barely leaves the spot it started at.
What you need to do is focus on just a few things. Firstly, keep your feet closer together, knees bent, head down and have most of your weight (70 / 30) on your left side (for right handers). Keeping most of your weight on your left side helps deliver the necessary descending blow required on the golf ball. Secondly, take a quicker wrist cock and ensure you make a downward, descending strike on the golf ball right through the impact zone. This allows the club head to do the work and the ball should pop up nicely off the club face and role smoothly onto the putting surface. Try these golf chip shot tips and you should start to see some dramatic improvement in your short game.

7 Soccer Tips For Goalkeepers
Sunday, July 11, 2010
You will also need to practice these tips and make them a part of your daily routine. The main aim of the goalkeeper is to save the goal. You should be ready at all times. Adapt the off season training tips in the matches that you play to become a great goalkeeper.
Stay focused on the ball at all times
Don't fall in the trap of just looking at the ball when it's in the 18-yard box. Keep yourself focused on the ball at all times, even if it's far away from you. Many goalies have realized to their horror the consequences of not paying attention to the ball when it's far way.
Be ready to leave the 18-yard box
The primary mission of the goalkeeper is to save the shots from reaching the goal. However, at some point in the game, you will need to leave the 18-yard box. Don't do this too often or the opponent can easily score while you are away. Be prepared to leave the goal and run in order to save the ball. Don't hold back at this time, instead run with confidence and determination.
Jump to reach the crosses
Before you jump in the air to save the ball, be sure that you can actually reach the ball. When you should and shouldn't jump for crosses is very difficult to determine. In fact, this is something that you will actually learn on the field as you gain more experience. If you lose the ball in the air, then the opposing team has an advantage over you.
Learn from your mistakes
Making mistakes is a part of the game. Unless you make mistakes, you won't go very far. Have confidence in yourself and then you can take out the opposition. You will concede goals. At these times, analyze what went wrong and then try not to repeat the mistake again.
Surprise your opponents
Don't make the first move, let your opponent do it first. This way you will be able to take them by surprise. As a soccer goalie, you should be able to judge the body language of the players. This is very important when the offensive players are taking a shot. You must be able to judge when, how and where the strikers are planning to shoot.
Standing close to the goal line is necessary
It's important that you stand close to the goal line (about one yard). Standing too far away from the goal line can give immense opportunities to the opposing team. You don't want to be caught with your guard down.
Don't be afraid of getting hurt
Goalkeepers can't be afraid of getting hurt. You will need to use you whole body to stop your opponents from scoring. In a tight situation, you must do everything you can in order to save the goal. Injuries happen in spite of all the training and the gear that the goalkeepers wear, but that's part of the game.

Teaching Children With Special Needs
Image : http://www.flickr.com
If you teach a youth football team there will come a time when you may have to teach a child who is physically impaired or has some sort of special needs condition. As coaches, we need to get him or her involved in the training as much as we can and help them to fit in without disrupting the rest of the team or getting injured in any way. A child's impairment can vary in many ways. It can be a simple situation of they may just have a lack of hearing, or there may be some loss of vision. There may also be some sort of loss of movement so maybe they cannot run as fast as other children.
How you deal with these situations will depend on what the condition is of the child. Before you even start with the training session, as a coach, it is best to have a chat with the child's parents to establish the full impairment and how it affects them in their normal life and also the goals and aspirations of the parents. You then have something to gauge how you handle the situation. Remember parents may be a bit apprehensive themselves and maybe looking to you for all the answers.
For things like a vision impairment, then they might have trouble seeing a white ball. So a simple change of a ball to a different color may help to deal with that situation. If the kid has a hearing impairment then you will have to find a way of communicating with them through some sort of signals or more demonstrations before the designed task is given so they can see what they want you to do. If your player has a disability so they can not run too well because of limb problems, then perhaps you can have the child doing a specific job. For example they could be the designated throw-in player, and you train them to just do that particular job. They could also be asked to be the designated corner kicker.
When the kids see their role in the game, their improvement will get better over the weeks of training just like the rest of the group. Having a child with special needs helps to enhance the rest of the team mates and gives them first hand experience of developing an understanding of other team mates needs and be able to be patient with them.
