Soccer Fitness - The Common Characteristic in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final Four Teams

The world cup quarter final games of late have been very exciting and dramatic to the least. Soccer fitness has definitely been very noticeable from my perspective as a major reason the four remaining teams are in the semifinal games. It will also be an important part of the finals.

The ability to perform repeated sprints with minimal recovery was key in Germany's victory over Argentina. This was very evident as the game progressed in to the second half. Any time Germany attacked and lost the ball they were quick to return and defend. Unfortunately Argentina appeared to fade as the game went on. They lost the ability to attack and defend with the same intensity.

This quality for soccer fitness is invaluable. A soccer player that is able to sprint and recover quickly regardless of the position he or she plays makes a difference towards the end of the game.

The soccer fitness level of the Netherlands grew as the game against Brazil carried on. It was as though the Brazilian players were being worn down as the Netherlands were relentless on their attack. Sprint and recover, sprint and recover and sprint and recover appeared to be the motive of the Netherland attackers up front. Unfortunately for Brazil they were unable to slow the game down or turn up a notch or two as many would have expected.

In the two other quarter final games it appeared to me that Spain, Paraguay, Uruguay and Ghana were fairly level with their fitness levels.

This makes it quite obvious that soccer is a game of power and speed and should be trained that way regardless of the age or gender of the soccer player. There are several ways to get into this type of condition:

1) Soccer players may perform interval training by changing the intensity, movement and recovery for soccer fitness drills. An example would be forward sprints for 10 seconds with twenty seconds recovery for a certain number of repetitions.
2) Repeated sprints of distance of 10M-40M
3) In season 3v3, 2v3, 4v4 or 3v4 at high intensities for time or goals then a short active recovery in the form of light individual dribbling then repeat again.

By doing these three things the ability to attack and defend with out being tired improves soccer fitness over the season and creates the stamina necessary to last an entire soccer game

2010 World Cup Soccer Tournament

The much awaited and anticipated sporting event of the year, the 2010 World Cup Soccer tournament finally kicked off on June 11, 2010 at the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The FIFA world cup tournament is held once every 4 years and it's a long bidding and qualifying process, for the participating countries and the respective teams. Italy won the last world cup championship which was held in Germany.

FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) is responsible for the organization and governance of football's major international tournaments, most notably the FIFA World Cup, held since 1930. FIFA also has recognized 6 other confederations to help oversee various regions across the world.

A total of 32 teams qualified to take part in the final 2010 World Cup tournament from various continents and regions as mentioned in the above section (About FIFA). The qualification process began in August 2007 with 204 national teams participating from around the world.

The qualification draw for the 2010 World Cup was held in Durban, South Africa in November 2009. Qualified teams are placed in 8 groups as shown below:

- Group A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France
- Group B: Korea Republic, Argentina, Nigeria, Greece
- Group C: USA, England, Slovenia, Algeria
- Group D: Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana
- Group E: Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon
- Group F: Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia
- Group G: Brazil, Korea DPR, Cote d'Ivoire, Portugal
- Group H: Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Chile

Teams within each group will play each other. Two teams from reach group, with the highest points, will proceed to group of 16 who will have to compete with the each other to proceed to the quarters, semis and finals.

The soccer matches will be held across various cities in South Africa and 10 specific venues were chosen. Below is a list of all the stadiums and the cities:

3. Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg
4. Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg
5. Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein

Zakumi, is the official mascot for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, an anthropomorphised leopard with green hair. His name comes from "ZA", the international abbreviation for South Africa, and "kumi", a word that means "ten" in various African languages.

Jabulani is name of the soccer match ball for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, made by Adidas, which means "bringing joy to everyone" in isiZulu. The 11 different colors on the ball represent the 11 official languages of South Africa, the 11 diverse South African communities that exist throughout the country, and the 11 players on the pitch.

They are deemed as examples by teenagers; their jerseys are the top wholesale jerseys and fanatically bought by jersey wholesalers; their words are the truth for football lovers!

My World Cup Unforgettable Moments

1. Spain 1982: The Elimination of Brazil by Italy

I was just a teenager then, and for us, Brazil was the god of soccer and players like Socrates, Falcao, Zico and Elder were its angels on earth. It was absolutely inconceivable that they could be beaten. But then it happened! An unknown Italian player called Paulo Rossi came from nowhere to score the hat trick that ousted Brazil in the second round of the World Cup.

It was a shock that reverberated around the whole world, and for me, the World Cup ended with the exit of Brazil. I can still feel the shock inside me even now.

2. Maradona's Second Goal Against England, Mexico 1986:

I still remember this goal as if it happened yesterday. It was the quarter-final match between England and Argentina and Diego Armando Maradona, the 25 year old Captain of the Argentina squad, dribbled swiftly with only his left foot past six England players to put the ball in the net. Argentina won 2 - 1 and went on to win the World Cup for the second time.

In 2002, that goal by Maradona was voted by football fans across the world as the goal of the century, and arguably, catapulted Maradona to the king of football status.

3. Italy 1990: The Mystery of Roger Miller, the 38 year old footballer

This Cameroonian striker was the oldest player at ''Italia 90'' and despite playing as a substitute in all of Cameroon's tournaments, he managed to scored four vital goals that got Cameroon into the quarter-finals, the highest achievement by an African team in the World Cup (which was later equaled by Senegal twelve years later in the 2002 World Cup).

Roger Miller's macosa jubilation dance after each of his goal is a moment that forever lingers.

4. U.S.A 1994: Andreas Escobar's Own Goal and Death

This lingers like a horror movie in my mind. Andreas Escobar, the Colombian defender mistakenly kicked the ball into the Colombian net in the first round match against America thus giving victory to America by 2 - 1. Columbia was eliminated and Andreas Escobar returned home with the rest of his team mates only to be murdered few days later.

For the first time, it dawned on me that the World Cup is a double - edged sword dripping with emotions as no one wants to lose.

I was watching a fashion show to get new trends of shoes. Wonder how some manage to buy them. Were they reliable enough? Is it worth spending? Or is it just as ordinary as others used to wear?

Starbucks finds itself in a difficult spot: it's got the #1 selling coffee product; however, the competition is coming on strong. The product managers at Starbucks realize that if the competition is successful at taking away the lower end of their customer base, then there will be nothing to stop them from moving up and capturing more and more customers over time.

The Basic Rules

The following are some of the most commonly observed youth soccer rules, as dictated by the United States Youth Soccer Associations (USYSA) and the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Remember that youth soccer rules can vary between leagues and age divisions, so always consult the local soccer authority for the final word on rules and regulations.

Each team is comprised of 11 players- 10 on the field and 1 in goal. According to youth soccer rules, a team is allowed a maximum of 3 substitutions during the match if it is part of an official competition. While all the players on the field must wear jerseys of the same color, the goalkeeper must wear a different colored jersey than their teammates and the referees. Most goalkeepers choose to wear a goalkeeping jersey, a pinnie or mesh training vest, or a t-shirt.

All players must wear shin guards both during practice and game play that must be covered with socks. Metal cleats are not permitted during youth soccer play. Only rubber cleats in the back of the shoe will be accepted.

A soccer match lasts 90 minutes, and is played in two halves. A team scores a goal when the entire ball has traveled across the goal line between the two posts and under the crossbar.

Hands Off

Arguably the most important rule in the game of soccer is that players are not allowed to use their hands or arms (from the tips of the finger to the shoulder) to move the ball while it is in play on the field. The sole exceptions to this rule are the goalkeepers. However, a goalkeeper may not use their hands on a pass that comes from one of their own teammates.

The 3 Kicks: Goal, Corner, and Penalty

When the ball is kicked out of bounds along one of the sidelines, a player from the opposite team gets to throw the ball onto the field at the point in which it went foul. Both feet must remain on the ground when throwing the ball in from the sidelines, and the throw must be executed overhead using both hands.

If the ball crosses the end line, a corner kick or goal kick is performed. If the offensive team was the last to touch the ball before it crossed the end line, then it is kicked in from any spot inside the goalkeeper's box, hence the name goal kick. Any player may execute the goal kick, not just the goalkeeper. If it was the defensive team that kicked the ball across the end line, it is kicked back into play from the corner nearest to where it left the field.

Penalty kicks are also a big part of youth soccer. If the defending team causes a contact foul or a hand ball within the penalty area, a penalty kick will be awarded to the offensive team. The ball is placed 12 yards away from the goal in the center, which is known as the penalty spot.

The goalkeeper must keep both feet on the goal line and all players must vacate the penalty area and remain outside until the ball is kicked. If a goal is not scored and the ball bounces back onto the field, it is still considered live, thus anyone can play it.

This method of form study, something which horseracing tipsters would call 'course and distance' form, is another important consideration when analysing the outright betting market.

In an immediate sense, any player who returns to an event the year after doing well at the tournament will have ranking points to defend. As such, unless they perform to the same level, under the rolling 12 month ATP points system they risk losing places in the overall standings as their ranking inevitably drops. In other words, they have an underlying motivation to challenge, even before the event begins.

And moving on from that, previous good form at a tournament would suggest the player is suited to the playing conditions - whether that be the actual court itself (a fast, bouncy surface or a very slow, clay court), the venue (indoor/outdoor), the location (temperature, altitude, continent) and the time of year (early/late season).

Naturally of more interest are those players with form over several years at the same event. Any player can get lucky in any one year, that's just the luck of the draw, but we do see certain players target certain events each season in their schedule... and that's no coincidence.

Also, don't be put off if a player hasn't actually won the tournament before but has made the QF's or SF's on more than one occasion. Again, that can just be down to meeting the wrong player on the wrong day. In this scenario what you need to determine is whether the player is something of a habitual choker or whether they do have past winning form elsewhere but just haven't won here, yet. Once you've found this out past form can be more easily evaluated.

The Russian was a former winner in Holland (2007) as well as making the QF's in (2008). Also this was the 6th time he had played in Rotterdam in nine years and Youzhny had also made the doubles final in 2008. The best place on the earth for a teenager growing up in the 70's and 80's for sure.
Growing up I was a Jersey Shore kid from Pennsylvania. I Always went to south jersey for vacation. Never any where else. Wildwood was my parent's hot spot. Cozy Morley's is where we stayed every summer for as long as I can remember.

I loved the Jersey shore, there was nothing else like it. There was a boardwalk, a beach, pools, fun in the sun, gift shops, ice cream shops and rides and games. What more could a kid ask for. I knew no other place but the this one. Ocean City, Wildwood, Sea Isle City, Margate, Longport and Atlantic City. Everyone I knew went to these places for their vacations.

I knew of no other shores growing up, did not think there even was any other shores in the United States. Our goal was to get there every summer whether it was for a day, weekend, and week or for the summer. You were not cool unless you went to the to this shore. Everyone wanted a tan and only the shore gives you the tropical tan.

My aunt lived in Ocean City, NJ. as her permanent residence. I went and spent the summers with her during my grade school years. I would make a friend for the summer and we would hang out and sunbathe every day. We did not have to work, just fun and sun all day every day. Who could ask for more than that? What kid would not say yes to every summer down the shore until school started back up again? I said yes and so did many other kids.

Wildwood was the senior week place to go for Catholic High Schools in Delaware County Pennsylvania. Everyone went to Wildwood for their senior week. Pack up the car, some food and a bathing suit and towel. We were off for the week. 4 of us in a hotel room with two beds to share. A week of no parents and a week of no school, no rules and no discipline. Who could ask for more?

There was the Bolero Hotel and Bar. The Drinking age was 18 back then so we all went into the bars. How much fun is that? Graduate high school, not old enough for the Pennsylvania bars but can drive 2 hours and walk into a bar and drink alcohol. Again, what teenager would turn that down?
To be a kid again but back in the 70's and 80's.

Who is Peggy Karr?

Peggy Karr is not exactly a household name. But her glassware can be found in many households around the world.

Peggy Karr started her business in 1987 in her home in Morristown, New Jersey. She had become enamored with the process of enameled glass and set out to master the technique. Peggy Karr Glass, Inc. has grown to be the largest enameled fused glass company in the world - and its all "Made in America."

The glass is cut by hand into over twenty different shapes and sizes to support a wide product line of display pieces, ornaments, dishes and serving trays. The company employs artists to create the designs, then uses a computer to print a line drawing as a basic template for the artisan.

One of the things that makes Peggy Karr Glass, Inc. unique in the industry is that they formulate and produce their own colors using a combination of finely ground glass and ceramic pigments. The artists apply the colors to the glass using tiny, hand-held sifters. It is a delicate and intricate process.

Layers of color are added to each piece using stencils that are computer generated. Although the actual designs are duplicated, each piece is handmade by the artisan with subtle variations of the depth of color and texture. Each piece is unique, but when purchased as a set, will look like matching pieces.

After the artisan has finished adding all the layers of color, a second layer of glass is added on top, ensuring that the design and colors will never fade or be chipped away. The two pieces of glass are then placed in a ceramic mold which will give the piece its final form and adds a distinctive pebble finish to the back of every piece. The molds are placed in a kiln that has been designed by Peggy Karr especially for her glassware. The kiln heats the glass to 1600 degrees, causing the two pieces of glass and to fuse tightly together, forming one solid piece of glass with the design and color sealed within.

The final pieces are highly functional as well as beautiful. The design and colors are protected from washing away or being scraped by knives and forks. Each piece is inspected and only those that are judged as perfect get the marking of 'PKG' for Peggy Karr Glass, followed by the year.

Her designs cover a wide variety, from traditional fruits and flowers to abstract and geometric shapes. They have been featured in leading magazines including Redbook, Mary Engelbreight's Home Companion and Coastal Living. Her products are widely sold at smaller specialty shops as well as major retailers.

The 2014 World Cup maybe some way off yet, indeed we have yet to witness the 2010 version in South Africa. Nevertheless, even though some 5 years away there is already a world cup buzz in Brazil.

The 2014 venues have recently been chosen, they are as follows:

As with all selection processes there are winners and losers, the winners are, the capital, Brasilia (no shock there), naturally too, Rio and Sao Paulo are selected. Belo Horizonte gets some of the games as does Porto Alegre, Curitiba in the south and Cuiaba in Central Brazil.

The north-east has done very well, with 3 cities chosen, Salvador, Recife/Olinda and Fortaleza. The Amazon region too has been selected (would have been an uproar if it hadn't) . There were only 2 possible venues, Belem or Manaus, the latter prevailed leaving the city of Belem very disappointed.

2 of the 3 north-eastern world cup venues have something extra to smile about, as Recife and Salvador get new stadiums (currently being built). All other venues will use existing stadia with extensive modernisations and improvements.

The official announcement citing the selected cities caused ripples of regional excitement as of course, hosting the world cup affords great opportunities for regeneration, notwithstanding more jobs and more investment. There is however a price to pay, such as state and local governments have to organize everything and ensure they meet the guarantees the Brazilian Federal Government have given FIFA.  

Everyone is excited, but nervous too, as all Brazilian's know the spotlight will be on them not only in terms of footballing pressure but other pressure factors too, such as; social and economic.

Brazilian's are very conscious of the world's eyes staring at them and will want to put on a show (and paper over any cracks too) - and I fully expect a treat come 2014 from the country of soccer [http://brazilwithoutborders.com/index.html] and samba.

It is time to become a global soccer team.

For one month the planet will become a real soccer ball! Every television will be connected to this extraordinary sport. The TV networks will make millions of dollars without counting all the products related for the World Cup 2010.

I remember when i was a little boy playing in the park or behind my parents house. I was a soccer player in my head! I wanted to become like them...the kings of the grass! All the incredible manipulations that theses players can do with the ball, the moves that will make anyone like me loose there pants at the same time the fragility of the game (broken bone, cramps).

32 teams or country will battle for the supreme cup. It will not be about individual aspect of the game but they will play for the country. Can you imagine the pressure that these players will have if they make a mistake that could cost the country to be eliminated!

I once read that some players never became the same after creating a mistake that was final! Some of them suicide them self!

This world cup like all the others world cups is bigger than life...it is the world! The world cup will bring people together, will bring memories and even will make some people forget the hard aspects of life ( at least for a month ). People will wake-up in the middle of the night just to watch the game, people will can sick at work to watch the game, people will create human relations by talking to other people.

Let's just enjoy this beautiful moment of sport and become the biggest soccer ball of the entire solar system!

Whats weird about all this is that after the cup everything and everyone will go back to the normal life...So for this short time, we should get the most out of this experience!
