World Cup Gifts For England Fans - South Africa 2010

In the summer of 2010 the biggest event in sport kicks off in South Africa, the World Cup Football Finals. All of the great international teams will gather to fight for the right to take home the World Cup trophy and be crowned champions of the football world for the next four years. Among the favourites to win are Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Germany and England. There will also be strong competition from the African nations, particularly the Ivory Coast and possibly the hosts, South Africa. The big name players are all involved, Christiano Ronaldo, Loinel Messi, Fernando Torrez, Wayne Rooney and Michael Ballack will all be desperate to win for their countries.

For those without tickets to see the games in South Africa there are plenty of ways to get involved and lots of superb memorabilia to collect. In England the most popular item is the flag of Saint George. Every time there is a big sporting occasion which England are involved in the whole country goes St. George crazy. Flags adorn houses, shops and offices and can be see in the windows of cars and trucks. The simple red cross on a white background is the proud emblem of a nation getting behind the team they love.

The English Football Association (The FA) have launched a very simple new football kit for the 2010 World Cup. Gone are the loud designs of the past, replaced with a simple white shirt with a small collar. The players number is positioned on the front of the shirt in red, right in the centre, with the famous three lions crest on the breast. The players name and number also appear in red on the reverse of the shirt. The effect is a timeless garment which any England fan would be proud to wear. The England 'away' kit is not unlike the famous red shirts that the 1966 World Cup winning squad wore on their victorious day.

London's Wembley Stadium provided the venue for the final, and 98000 people crammed inside to watch. After 12 minutes 32 seconds Helmut Haller had put West Germany ahead, but the score was levelled by Geoff Hurst four minutes later. Martin Peters put England in the lead in the 78th minute; England looked set to claim the title when the referee awarded a free kick to West Germany with one minute left. The ball was launched goalward and Wolfgang Weber managed to poke it across the line, with England appealing in vain for handball as the ball came through the crowded penalty area. With the score level at 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes, the game went to extra time. In the 98th minute Hurst found himself on the score sheet again; his shot hit the crossbar, bounced down onto or near the goal line. Whether the ball actually crossed the goal line or not has been a matter of discussion for decades, and the controversial call has become part of World Cup history. Recent digitally-enhanced footage is said to clearly illustrate that Geoff Hurst's second goal did cross the line In the last minute it was Hurst again, who dribbled easily through the German half to net his third goal, just as the gathered crowd invaded the pitch to celebrate with the team, thus cementing the victory for England with another controversial goal. This made Geoff Hurst the only player ever to have scored three times in a World Cup final.

2010 FIFA World Cup Match Reviews - England Versus Algeria, Group C

England was not only the favourite to top Group C, but also one of the favourites to win the World Cup. Facing tournament minnows Algeria, England was expected to romp to victory by at least two goals. The game was not the most exciting for the neutral fan, but it had a great storyline. England was held 0-0 by Algeria in the first-ever meeting between the two countries. It was a splendid result for the Algerians while English fans were very disappointed. The result left England needing a win against Slovenia to ensure qualification. The pressure was on the English - not only for the result, but also for the way they played.

Algeria and England used different goalkeepers from their opening games, since Chaouchi and Robert Green made blunders in the opening round - the kind of blunders you pay for with points. The opening exchanges were even, with England having more ball possession. Most of the shots taken in the first half were off-target. Algeria was hanging in during the half, but England did not show the urgency or creativity that even the likes of Uruguay was able to display in the World Cup.

The teams entered halftime locked at 0-0.

England made no substitutions at the half, which was surprising given the way they played. Perhaps England coach Fabio Capello felt it was a matter of time before his side breached Algeria's defence. It was only in the 62nd minute that England made a change, with Shaun Wright-Phillips coming on for Aaron Lennon. The match continued in a scrappy fashion. England did not manage to control the pace of the game and had the number of shots at goal restricted to long-range, ambitious efforts. It did not help England's cause that Wayne Rooney was rarely in possession of the ball in the attacking third.

Capello introduced Tottenham striker Jermaine Defoe in the 73rd minute and sent in Peter Crouch in place of Gareth Barry in the 83rd minute. Despite his efforts to get a win that would give them wiggle room in the group, England lacked creativity towards the end. The frustration was evident on the faces of the English players as the Three Lions really failed to roar. England only had 15 shots on goal for the entire match; Algeria had thirteen. The draw left Group C wide open, since any of the four teams had a chance of qualifying when the final round got underway.

Who Will Be the England Goalkeeper For South Africa 2010?

With England's World Cup place in South Africa already assured, and the outfield players finally performing as a team, much focus would be on their perceived weak link, the goalkeeping position. The English have had talented goalkeepers in the past, such as Peter Shilton and David Seaman. But ever since Seaman's retirement, it has been a game of goalkeeping musical chairs with no goalkeeper staking his place in the first team.

Let's look at some of the likely candidates for the England goalkeeper position at South Africa 2010:

1) David James

Once dubbed "Calamity James" for his goalkeeping howlers, James has been a steady performer for West Ham and Portsmouth and was the first choice for England until his unfortunate injury. The question on everybody's mind would be if he can continue the same form he showed before his injury. Another factor against him is that James would be 40 come the next World Cup, and would be considered old even for a goalkeeper.

2) Ben Foster

Ben Foster is highly regarded by soccer insiders. Sir Alex Ferguson, Foster's manager at Manchester United, has no doubt that Foster will be the number one England goalkeeper at South Africa. But first, he has to stake his place at club level. Foster has played second fiddle to Edwin Van de Sar for far too long, only starting the season because of Van de Sar's injury. He has also been inconsistent, mixing unconvincing displays with the occasional wonder save.

3) Robert Green

Green started the game against Croatia that sealed England's place in the finals and might have won the race to be England's first choice goalkeeper. His club form for West Ham has been consistent and it may be about time he got his break on the world stage. But West Ham are no world beaters, and his lack of European level experience might count against him.

4) Paul Robinson

Robinson was once the successor to David Seaman, but disastrous displays in the England shirt confined him to the sidelines for 2 years until Fabio Capello included him to the current squad. But he has not played in a match under Capello and if included, would likely be the 2nd or 3rd choice goalkeeper.

5) Scott Carson

Carson was once touted as one of the best young goalkeepers in England, but it was his mistake against Croatia in 2007 that knocked England out of the qualifying rounds for Euro 2008. He remains on the fringe and may be able to make a comeback depending on his club form.

Who will be the England goalkeeper for South Africa 2010? Your guess is as good as mine.
