Fortune to try the new Official Match ball World cup had professional players and club teams of the football pitch. Tax Lien Investing in New Jersey - Calculating How Much Premium You Can Pay

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In order to calculate how much premium you can pay for a tax lien, you first have to know what your bottom line is. In other words, what is the lowest return that you are willing to accept on your investment? Then you can calculate just how much premium you can pay and still make the profit that you want. I use Tax Lien Manager, a software program for New Jersey tax lien investing created by DataVentures I LLC to do this for me. Tax Lien Manager computes premium for a 4%, 5% and 6% return based on the assumption that the lien will be held for a minimum of one year and that you will pay all subsequent taxes when they are due. Here's how you can calculate how much premium you can pay if you don't have software that does this for you like Tax Lien Manager.

Once you know the return that you want, you then have to know how many tax quarters are open at the time of the sale and what the annual taxes are. Let's assume that you are going to a tax lien sale in August and that the municipality is on a calendar year. As of August 10th, you will be able to pay 3 quarters of open (subsequent) taxes on any tax liens that you buy.

When you pay premium for a tax lien certificate, your profit consists of the redemption penalty + the interest on your subsequent tax payments. Your total investment is the certificate amount + premium + subsequent taxes paid. Your total return on your money is total profit divided by your total investment:

Redemption Penalty + Interest on Subsequent Taxes
_______________________________________________

Certificate Amount + Premium + Subsequent Taxes Paid

For this example, let's assume that the certificate amount is $2000.00 and the annual taxes are $4000.00. The redemption penalty is $2000.00 x 2% or $40.00. Since it's after Aug 10th and you can pay 3 quarters of open (subsequent) taxes, interest on the subsequent taxes is 18% x $3000.00 or $540.00. Your total profit is $40.00 + $540.00 or $580.00. Your total investment without the premium is the Certificate Amount + Subsequent Taxes Paid or $2000.00 + $3000.00 = $5000.00. Calculate premium with a 5% return on your money as follows:

$40 + $540 / ($2000 + $3000 + X) = 5%, where X=premium.

$580 / ($5000 + X) = .05

Multiplying both side of the equation by (5000 + X), you get:

580 = .05 (5000 + X)

580 = 250 + .05X

Subtracting both sides of the equation, you get:

330 = .05X

Dividing both sides of the equation by .05, you get:

X = 6600, or premium = $6600.00.

This is a simplified equation and does not take into account interest on future subsequent payments. If the lien is held for one year and you keep paying the subs, your actual return will be higher. If you are using Tax Lien Manager, you will get a more accurate result based on paying one year of subsequent taxes.

FIFA World Cup 2010 Quarter Final Match - Brazil Vs Holland

Sunday, September 26, 2010

Yesterday World Cup second round matches had been a fascinating affair. Brazil and Holland emerged victorious in both of their round of 16 matches. Brazil beat Chile 3-0 while Holland beat Slovakia 2-1 in the earlier match. Both teams will meet each other in the quarter final stage of this year FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa. This should be an intriguing match and will surely attract plenty of attention as both football super power nation face each other. Brazil has won 5 world titles under their belt while Holland has yet to win any. However, Holland can not be under estimated as they have a long tradition of playing exceptionally good football and are capable of beating any team in the world. Their "Total" football philosophy is scintillating and attractive. Brazil is famous for their "Samba" style football that is capable of dominating a match from start to finish. Both teams are very good at holding and keeping possession of the ball making it very difficult for their opponent to beat them.

In yesterday game, Brazil goals scorers were Juan, Luis Fabiano and Robinho. Juan scored Brazil first goal with a header from a corner kick. Follow by Luis Fabiano well taken goal assisted by Kaka. Lastly, Robinho ended Chile misery with the third goals making the score line 3-0 to Brazil. In another match, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder give Holland a two goals advantage before Robert Vittek scored from the penalty spot deep into the injury time. It was a comfortable win 2-1 for the Dutch.

Both teams will clash on 2 of July 2010 for a place in the semi final. The one that come out as a winner will sure be the favorite to reach the final as the opponent in the semi final is either Ghana or Uruguay. Either Brazil or Holland is expected to beat any of the two teams to reach the final of this year tournament.

World Cup - Broken Cup

Saturday, September 25, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The World Cup is the biggest sporting event the world over. Unfortunately, it is broken and is in dire need of repair in the 21st Century. If left broken, its distinguished title may well change from World Cup to ignominious appellations as Empty Cup, Broken Cup, Shattered Cup or even Once-Upon-A-Time Cup.

The World Cup attracts soccer fans from the four corners of the earth. Hundreds of millions of viewers watch, enthusiastically, as their country battles for the Cup's coveted championship title. Furthermore, also to millions, soccer is not just a game or an activity but a passion, sometimes to a fault, sometimes to a lethal fault.

Why is the World Cup broken? Simply, it's not keeping up with the times, nor doing everything in its power to insure the ethics of its sport. Perhaps the greatest and most grievous issue involves its officiating, whose quality clearly does not equate or rise to the status of professional standards in the modern world.

At this level of competition, referees cannot be allowed to err in their calls, especially when those calls affect outcomes held dearly by nations and multitudes of fans and enthusiasts. For example, in the England vs. Germany game, a clear English goal was disallowed, the ball bouncing off the goal post to three feet or so inside the goal. A video replay offered indisputable proof that the ball did cross the line, substantiating a score. Yet, the game continued, no doubt having a dramatic affect on the momentum of the English team and perhaps the final outcome of the game. Another instance was in a U.S. game when the ball bounced off the shoulder of an attacker in the box which was called a handball which, by indisputable video replay, showed the ball never hitting the player's hand. This obviously affected the outcome of its game.

In lieu of these grievous mistakes the question has to be asked, "Why, in the World Cup - the greatest sporting event in the world - and with so much at stake, is video replay not allowed?" In this modern era of video technology and capability, it is absolutely unforgivable that in the search of truth video replay is not utilized. Such disallowance does nothing but hinder the ethics of the game, its credibility and continuing support. Moreover, it is unconscionable that World Cup organizers and officials have allowed this most pejorative situation to exist. Why should anyone watch or support the World Cup when the truth and purity of the outcomes of games are neither respected nor honored? Such oversights create a sham of the World Cup. Other sports and sporting events in the world have grown and embraced technology in the quest to "get it right" and insure that truth of victory is held to the highest of standards. Clearly, the 2010 World Cup has not risen to the highest standard of sport, but if it wishes to remain an iconic event, it has no option but to divest itself of worn out systems of officiating and embrace technology in the quest to "get it right" and insure that truth, not temporal tradition, prevails.

World Cup 2010 Kenya Gears Up As A Stop Over Attraction

Friday, September 24, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There is no event like the soccer world cup. All the others, the olympics, world athletics championship, continental soccer derbies may come close but none ever gets quite there. The world cup is in a class of its own.

For the very first time, the 32 nations soccer finals will be held in Africa. South Africa will be the host country, and new football facilities and improvement of the existing ones are being put up to ensure the country is ready to host the world.

It is not lost on the other countries in the region that the world cup is too big an event for one country to handle single handedly. Teams will require to acclimatise, for the event before going to the actual venue. Countries that share the same conditions as the venue, have good sporting facilities, established infrastructure, media and accommodation will come in handy.

Of all the nations in Africa, none fits better in this category like Kenya. Apart from the 60,000 seater Moi international sports complex, the country also boasts of two other stadiums in the city, Nyayo and city stadiums that are international standard. The city stadium which has a long history as the home of dreams for soccer players and fans, is set for major renovations before 2010.

Kenya is known as a vibrant tourism destination. There are excellent accommodation facilities in Kenya that have over the years been used by the millions of tourists who visit the many tourist attractions in the country. The media here is vibrant. Indeed apart from south Africa, Kenya is the only other country in Africa, south of the Sahara where the internet and mobile phone can be found even in the remotest shopping centers.

Football stars will have it easy here. In fact the top African football teams prefer Nairobi as their first choice training ground. The indomitable lions of Cameroon and the flying eagles of Nigeria have in set camp here in the last two years in Kenya.

Apart from the main stadiums, there are institutions that could offer excellent training grounds for teams seeking for privacy. The central bank owned facility, Kenya school of monetary studies has everything that any world cup participating team would want. Their pitch is world class, their accommodation excellent, security provided by the paramilitary general service unit and its only a twenty five minutes drive from the international airport.

With a little upgrade, the Karen based KC B institute can also provide excellent training grounds. Teams that would not mind to use facilities outside Nairobi, will find Naivasha an attractive destination. Flower based companies have put up good facilities that will only need polishing up for use.

Tanzania have recently opened a sixty thousand seater in Dar-es-salaam. It will also be available as a training ground for world cup bound teams, and its marketing has already been initiated by the Tanzania government. Uganda and Rwanda will surely try to market their venues as well.

The world cup may be headed for South Africa, but Kenya and the East African region are already making preparations to catch on the biggest event ever to come to Africa.

Tony Blair Pelted With Eggs And Shoes At Book Signing

Thursday, September 23, 2010

www.realestateradiousa.com | Tony Blair Has Eggs Thrown At Him At Book Signing Former prime minister attacked by anti-war protesters in Dublin as he promotes memoirs I know that the British and Scots have long been the butt of jokes because of the soccer hooligans rampaging at futbol events, but what happened today brings hooliganistic behavior into the mall. Protesters angry over Britain's role in the war took their aggressions out on Tony Blair, the former prime minister. Blair was at a book signing at Eason's Bookshop on O'Connell Street in Dublin Ireland when a near riot erupted with protesters getting as crazy as to throw eggs at him. They even took off their shoes and threw them at Blair as well. Tony Blair's was in Dublin celebrating the release of his memoirs when the first of the protesters broke through the security barrier at approximately 10:45am. The demonstrators, ranging from anti-war demonstrators to the Continuity IRA-aligned Republican Sinn Fein, who oppose the Northern Ireland peace process, are now marching to a garda police station in the city centre demanding the release of the three arrested men. Gardai had earlier dragged a number of demonstrators off the street and during the fracas a male protester in a wheelchair was knocked to the ground. Protesters shouted "Whose cops? Blair's cops!" as they taunted the gardai while Blair remained inside the bookshop. They also shouted: "Hey hey Tony hey, how many kids have you killed today?" About 400 people ...

South Africa World Cup Preview of Games on Friday, June 18

One week into the 2010 World Cup we now have Germany and Serbia play in their second game of Group D at 12:30. Slovenia will face USA at 15:00 and the late kick off at 19:30 will be between England and Algeria.

The Germans should be strong favourites against Serbia, however Serbia have some talented player and may upset Germany in this match. With Michael Ballack captaining the German National Team I can see him have a great game in midfield. At 33 this will be his last world cup. He has scored an amazing 42 goals for Germany. This is some return from a midfield player. Germany could quite well add the 2010 world cup to their previous 3 triumphs. Nemanja Vidic is Serbias best export as a football player. Plying his trade at Old Trafford Theatre of Dreams in Manchester the 28 year old will have to be at his best form to ensure Serbia get something from this game. I predict a 2-0 victory for the German Team.

The midday kick off will see Slovenia play USA at 15:00. With Landon Donovan in great form for Everton he will be looking to impress to get a big money move to a European Team. At 27 years of age he has time on his side to help the USA to progress to the knock out stages. Slovenia knocked out Russia in their world cup play off to reach the world cup but will find it hard to qualify from this group that includes England. I predict a 3-1 win for the USA

In the late night kick off we get to see England play Algeria. England with their Star man Wayne Rooney will be expected to win quite easily. Having qualified with a near 100 percent record for this world cup England come into this tournament with high hopes. Algeria will be quite happy to get a point in this game. I predict an easy 1-0 victory to England.

No Mushy Valentine's Day Gifts For Him

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Selecting the best gift for Valentine's Day for your man can be a tricky task as most men pride themselves on not being mushy. The common Valentine's Day gifts for women like flowers and chocolates are something that does not work for men.

So, take time out and figure out what he will like or what he wants. Before you decide on the gift, you should know the recipient first and about his likes and dislikes. It may sound obvious and simple. But not only is this the most important aspect but also often the most neglected one.

To ensure that you get the best gift for your man, make sure that you start listing his interests and likings and his favourite stuff months in advance. Also, make a note of what are the things that you like in your man. Reflect on the good moments that you have spent together along with the memorable moments that you know are dear to him. The more detailed a list you prepare, more sure you can be of getting the perfect gift for him.

Gift Basket

With the list ready, you can create a gift basket for him. You can further personalise it for him with the list of things that you have made a note of.

When making this basket, select one of the topics of his interest. Now, include as many items you can that relate to that interest and add it to the basket. For instance, if he is someone who loves soccer then you can select a soccer theme for the basket.

Thus, in the soccer themed gift basket, you can include items like warm socks, his favourite team's jersey and hat with the team's logo. You can also include a mini-radio with earphones which will help him to catch the broadcast of the match live. You can also get him tickets for the game and place it along with the Valentine's Day card that you have bought for him.

You can also gift him a romantic gift basket which can include various items that will make for a special night together. For instance, you can include items like candles, a bottle of something that your list shows he likes and two glasses for it, along with a small bag of rose petals for bath. You can also add to his fantasies by including a pair of silk boxer shorts with a ribbon tied to it.

Romantic Gestures

This is another way to make sure that you gift him something that he likes. You can plan out a day together to a special event. You can get tickets for the two of you to the kind of sporting event, movie or concert that you feel he really likes and will enjoy.

You can also make restaurant reservations for the evening to his favourite place.

With the gift ideas mentioned above, you can be sure of not going wrong planning the perfect day out for him.

Soccer Coaching - Soccer Skills and Training Lessons From the World Cup

Monday, September 20, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Below are 6 lessons about soccer skills and soccer training that I learned from the 2010 World Cup:

1. One-Touch Play is Critical in Order to Play Fast. Good soccer players must play fast. There often isn't time for 2-touch. You can use the Dribble Around Cone & Pass Relay Race Practice Game to teach one-touch play.

2. Teach Soccer Players to Block the Ball When they are Running Onto it Near the Goal Rather than Trying a Big Shot. Landon Donovan's goal vs. Algeria is a perfect example. He blocked it into the corner using the inside of his foot - there was NO backswing. The ball had plenty of power because he was running onto it. Think of how many shots went wide over the top because players kicked the ball too hard. Donovan kept his eyes on the ball, ran onto it and blocked it (one-touch) for the goal.

3. What Makes a Great Soccer Goal Scorer? In this World Cup, Klose of Germany and David Villa of Spain were 2 of the best. Both of them are smart players who anticipate where the ball will be and move to the right place. They are persistent, opportunistic and determined. I don't think either of them would win a skills contest, but they know how to score. Klose isn't flashy, but he is very smart.

4. Teach Your Attackers to Stay a Step or 2 Behind the Ball on a Counterattack. If you watched Klose, he would stay a step or 2 behind the ball on a fast counterattack. This gave him 2 advantages: he was less likely to be called offside and he could run onto the ball and block it into the net.

5. All Forwards Should Pressure the Goalkeeper Like David Villa. I was very impressed with David Villa of Spain, not just because of his scoring but because late in the Germany game (75th minute and later) with Spain leading, he kept pressuring the German goalkeeper. That didn't let the German Keeper take his time on punts or kicks off the ground. (Remember, a player can't "harass" the Keeper, but a player can pressure them to pick up the ball). I thought his hustle set an example for his team. At that point he had scored 5 of Spain's 7 goals and had assisted on another, so he was responsible for 6 of the 7 goals, and if he had just stood there like most Forwards no one would have said anything.

6. A Great Dribbler Who Can Break Down the Defense is Very Valuable, BUT He Must Know When to Pass. Messi is the ultimate example. He uses the dribble to set up the pass. He pulls defenders out of position to create space for a teammate and then passes the ball and follows up the shot. Arjen Robben is also a great dribbler and can disrupt defenses, but he has the reputation of sometimes dribbling too much when he should pass.

Michael Owen's Soccer Skills - Part 2

Brazilian Soccer Schools (BSS) created by Simon Clifford. Simon was a teacher before he raised funds to travel to Brazil to see what makes the Brazilians brilliant at football. Simon made his first trip in 1997 and spoke to Brazilian greats such as Zico and Rivelino on how they were coached and how they coach now. He came back to England with some weighted size two footballs and a new method of coaching. Though his first session had an attendance of only four children, Simon has made the BSS an international success. Simon also owns and runs Socatots which teaches children between the ages of six months and five years old basic football skills. Using the game of futebol de salao children use a weighted size two ball which enhances their technical ability. Proven to deliver results this has lead to Brazilian Soccer Schools becoming international and is now known as the International Confederation of Futebol de Salao (ICFDS). Futebol de Salao gave Brazilian players such as Pele, Socrates, Cafu and Juninho the technical ability which lead them to become some of the best players of their time. One of the best known english players to come out of the BSS is England and Man City centre back Micah Richards. Another is the world champion football free-styler John Farnworth who started his career at the BSS and now entertains thousands of people with his technical ability. In 2003 Simon Clifford bought the unknown Garforth Town AFC and plans to get them into the Premiership in the ...

Why is New Jersey Called the Garden State?

Sunday, September 19, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Why is New Jersey called the Garden State? In 1926, Alfred Heston published an historical account of New Jersey citing a moment in 1876 when Abraham Browning compared New Jersey to "an immense barrel, filled with good things to eat and open at both ends, with Pennsylvanians grabbing from one end and the New Yorkers from the other. He called New Jersey the Garden State, and the name has clung to it ever since." Although, New Jersey has historical roots tied to gardening, its modern ties to its nickname might be even more extensive. This is despite the famous 1954 incident where the Governor refused to sign a bill that would add this nickname to the state license plates. Although true that New Jersey is also strong in many other areas of manufacturing, mining, and construction its historical and modern ties are very extensive.

New Jersey has nearly a dozen garden clubs and several state associations with two large community gardens, Denville Community Garden and the Greater Newark Conservancy. Look around and you will find bird sanctuaries, garden museums, arboretums, and many historical garden sites. In addition, New Jersey has almost 10.000 individual farms spanning nearly 800,000 acres of farmland and among those leading the nation in many forms of agricultural production. New Jersey is a large supplier of tomatoes, corn, blueberries, cranberries, spinach, bell peppers, peaches, lettuce, apples, strawberries, potatoes, hay, and soybeans. Additionally, New Jersey is also famous for their wines and fruit wines with nearly three dozen wineries spanning the state.

New Jersey is extensively covered in parks and tress with more than 50% of the state still wooded. In fact, New Jersey strongly pushes for land conservation and protection of its natural trees, resources, and wildlife. The push for modern "greenways" by many of the local organizations is one example of the modern way the New Jersey citizens define themselves by their state nickname. The New Jersey greenway vision is a push for "interconnecting systems of parks, trails, and protected natural areas, farmland, and historical places" according to Ed McMahon, director of the American Greenways Program. With a future vision of keeping in touch with its traditional roots its clear that many modern citizens continue to identify with the state nickname.

Gardening is an extremely popular hobby in New Jersey. New Jersey is also famous for its master gardener programs at Rutgers where from 1984 to 2008 the program has accumulated over 1.2 million volunteer hours by the locals willing to learn and help out, according to a report by the university. This program has been extremely beneficial for getting people more excited and interested in gardening and landscaping in the area. The push for gardening even extends into the Northern New Jersey suburban housing where container gardening and window box gardening have become increasingly popular trends. The nickname not only defines New Jersey from a historical point of view it remains today an important symbol that represents what the average person from New Jersey relates to as well.

World Cup USA 94 (Italy VS Ireland)

It was the summer of 1994 and the date was June 18, a day on which Italy would be playing its first world cup game against the Republic of Ireland. I for my part would be not only watching it but even present at "Giant's Stadium" in the Meadowlands as I had gone through the trouble of getting a ticket, not only to see Italy take on Ireland but Norway in the next match as well. Regarding the game against Norway that had been a relatively easy task as interest had not been so high given there are not as many Norwegian Americans in New York or New Jersey as there are Irish Americans in these states. I however had pulled it off and would be sitting at "Giant's Stadium" hopefully to watch Italy beat Ireland like they had done four years before in "Italia 90".

By then I; it being four years after the tragedy had fully recovered from having lost to Argentina on penalties in 1990 and even from not having qualified to the European Nations Cup in 1992, which thanks to the by then already disintegrated Soviet Union, Italy did not play in. This would basically be Italy's first competitive match in a major tournament since that night so long ago in Napoli, against Argentina. I mean after all who really counts a match for third place in any tournament as competitive.

Many had been the changes in Italy, now being coached by Arrigo Sacchi, the man who had made Milan invincible or practically and was expected to at least get to the final of USA 94. Roberto Baggio, had also become our star player after Italia 90, who surely would be starting every game; him even being considered by many at the time as arguably the greatest player of his generation, along with Brazil's Romario and Argentina's Batistuta. Italy, naturally also had other solid players, some of which were new to the team, such as Dino Baggio (no relation to Roberto), and Daniele Massaro, from AC Milan and Signori from Lazio.

Of course as with every team that aspires to win a world cup, Italy also had those players who were returning from the previous tournament such as the more experienced Maldini and Baressi. Both these players coming from AC Milan, who had won that year's edition of the European Cup; presently known as the Champions League. As for notable absence, their really were not any, as most were healthy or least enough to start though some around the world wondered why Italy's top goal scorer from the last world cup; Schillaci would not be playing but this was basically due to his poor form in the years preceding the world cup. All things considered there was great reason for Italy's many fans to think their team could do in USA 94 what they had not managed to do in Italia 90 and that being to win the world cup.

In all this however there were other factors, and one of them being that Italy's team was overly dependent on Roberto Baggio and the form he showed on any particular day; basically what it boiled down to was Italy was as good or as bad as Roberto Baggio was. Another thing to consider was that though Italy had qualified to the world cup without too many difficulties, they had not really been overly impressive coming in second to Switzerland in their group.

This a team, whom they barely managed a 2-2 draw against while playing at home and had even lost to by 1-0 on their return match. I even recall one particular qualifying match in which Italy was forced to play under a practical blizzard of snow in Scotland that ended in 0-0. Roberto Baggio, having to be literally carried of the field after a collision with a Scottish player, both of whom were going for the same ball which was coming down. Qualifying had definitely not been all that easy however Baggio and company had prevailed and even managed a win in their last qualifying match against Portugal at home, when a draw would have sufficed to get them to USA 94.

I, at the time (as far as my life went) no longer found myself working in John Hancock's mutual fund department; having been laid off a couple of weeks earlier but not before having made a few bets with some of the Irish American at work, who naturally put their money on Ireland's greens while I did so on Italy's azzurri. I, however in looking back regarding my job would have in all honesty missed several days at work, in what would have been a first for me (who had not even taken one day off) in over a year at John Hancock, for as important as work is; this is football and a world cup at that, so it comes first. I imagine that to a lot of Americans, who do not descend from football playing countries; an attitude such as mine might seem strange, if not irresponsible but that is the way many all over the world feel about football. Some even go to the extreme of giving up their jobs and spending all their savings on going to the games to cheer their team to victory.

As for Ireland; they were definitely not a bad team, solid on defense with big strong players capable of shooting the ball with both legs, and not unskilled either. Ireland, also however did not have many good players on the bench and were limited in their attacking game to mostly plays that went down the flanks in order to set up the air ball in the box, for a header or a lucky bounce. These sometimes coming from their goalkeepers long distance kicks as had been the case with their tying goal against the Netherlands in Italia 90.

I, in all that concerned this most special day for me; will never forget the pride I took when putting on the blue shirt of the Italian national football team, in order to show my support for "La Squadra Azzurra". I being a fan also had purchased a small Italian flag in the part of Manhattan known as "Little Italy", where I would go on to watch the final. I was even slightly worried that I might end up being surrounded by a group of Irish fans; who probably would not take loosing too kindly. All of which made me hopeful of being in an Italian section but this I would have little control over.

As for the rest of the world cup, up and till that moment, only two games had been played with the first game ending with a surprisingly difficult 1-0 victory for Germany over Bolivia, while the second one held no unique attraction, other then it was the first world cup game ever to be played in an indoor stadium. This second game having been played the very day of the one I was getting ready to go to and having ended in a 1-1 draw between the USA and Switzerland, who in qualifying had given Italy everything it could handle.

In my excitement I also started thinking, how it was going to be the first game, I had ever seen live between two national teams which not only was not a friendly but a world cup match at that. I had never even seen as much as a qualifying match of any kind, not even to the European cup, so to me it was a huge deal to be able to see the nation of my forefathers in action against Ireland. This taking on an additional importance in New York City, given that many are either of Irish or Italian descent and are not always friendly toward each other.

I basically got in the spirit of the game that moment I bought my ticket however as for actually having it all around me; this came when I got to the Port Authority Bus terminal and saw all the flags, half of which were Irish and the other Italian. I, naturally looked to be near those who were Italian, as this was a day to be among one's contingents. The mood was definitely right for an international football game and as I looked around I could also see fans with painted faces, the Irish applying their national colors orange, green and white while Italians red, white and green.

Once at Port Authority I had no problems in catching a bus to Giant's Stadium, where the game would be played. As for the bus I took I would say it was evenly divided among both Italian and Irish supporters, with it being abundantly clear who was for which team based on the colors on the flags they carried. In all this however it was odd to see that most of the fans weather for Ireland or Italy were actually Americans descendent from one or the other, with most of the Italian fans not even speaking Italian. Something I noticed when I tried speaking to a few in Italian who at least recognized what language it was even if they could not understand or much less reply.

In all this I must say much to the credit of the organizers of this tournament, there was no violence of any kind from either side though the occasional racial or ethnic slur could be heard from both sides with Italians refereeing to the Irish as "micks". This given that many Irish have the letters Mc in their last name, while the Irish responded in not so kind be calling Italians "w.o.p.s" These three letters standing for "with out papers", as many Italians first arrived to America illegally and like the expression says without papers. However these "verbal taunts" for the most part were limited and did not, or at least that I saw degenerate in to physical violence.

After, a short bus ride, we that is I and my fellow Italian supporters entered Giant's Stadium and by then the electricity was everywhere, today we would see who would have bragging rights in the city of New York. Would it be the Irish or Italians? This we would soon find out and though Italy was slightly favorite, this did not connote automatic victory by any means.

The national anthems were played and in all sincerity I do not remember whose was played first but this did not matter; for both were sung with equal passion by both sides after which our two captains, Baresi for Italy and Bonner (goalkeeper) for Ireland exchanged flags and the game was on. I, naturally by then found myself in my seat and was fortunate, that I was in a part were Italians outnumbered Irish, which put me at ease that I should not have too much trouble. For instance as my brother-in-law did once; at a game in Spain 82 were he suffered a broken head, this despite his being from Madrid.

Italy started much as they had played up and till that point; with Baresi leading the team and organizing it from the back. All the while looking for Baggio's offensive creativity to provide us with the same kind of magic he had displayed for Juventus, the previous year that earned him the title of FIFA player of the year. Ireland as always solid, in their mobile defense, and always a danger on the counter attack, in fact there game was typical of the one mostly practiced on the British Isles and with Jack Charlton (brother of Bobby Charlton) as their coach why should it come as a surprise.

Chances there were some for Italy though Ireland, had studied their game plan well and goals would not come easy, however one did relatively early. It coming when Houghton lobbed our goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca at the 11 minute mark of the game to put Ireland a head 1-0. A perfect shot it was and in the net it went, after which Houghton did a roll over as all the Irish faithful celebrated and grew in confidence that they could beat the team that had not only eliminated them from the last world cup but had come in third place, along with having won three world titles.

The lines of battle were clearly drawn at that point, Italy would have to go forward while Ireland could simply wait in the midfield and take advantage of any loose ball to go on the counter and increase their lead. Baggio, was being well taken care of, as this was not only our greatest scoring threat but the key to our offense and Charlton knew it. The first half would end and still we were down 1-0 and the Irish grew more sure of themselves.

The second half came and by then Italy started to worry and go forward in attack with more desperation, though Ireland was still solid in their wall of defense, while chants from their supporters got louder as did their reason to believe this could be their day in the summer as Saint Patrick's is theirs in the spring. It was actually half way through the second period that those of us who backed Italy could see that we might actually not only loose this game but not even end up getting on the score board. Chances we created but always the same result Bonner, and his defenders would not have anything put over on them or at least not on that day and in fact Ireland in the second half came closer to a second goal when they hit the post, then Italy did to a first.

The final whistle came, and so did the celebrations of the Irish, and did they ever want us to know they had gotten the best off us on that day. I, however for my part felt they played a good game but for Italy all was not lost. As they could still qualify, specially since many teams had lost their first match to go on not only to the second round but the finals as was the case with Argentina in 90 or Germany in 82, of course both these teams ended up loosing in the final but that was another issue. Italy could still do it but this would mean almost having to beat Norway, for a loss would really limit our chances though not completely for with the system at the time; 16 out of 24 teams qualified. This making it possible for the best four third place teams to make it and after all Uruguay and Bulgaria had both gone through to the second round in 86, on the strength of two draws and a loss. Hopefully, however it would not come to this for Italy as they would beat Norway but that is another game for that one had ended with the Irish on top by 1-0.

Italy's fans were depressed but as I explained to someone on the bus back to New York that all it was; was a set back and not the end, which those around me eventually did see it as. I even remember passing by a pizzeria near my apartment, me living in Brooklyn at the time in a part of the city reserved mostly for Polish immigrants (Green Point) and seeing how dejected, all my fellow Italians (some Italian American, some born in the old country) were though perhaps more so because we had lost to a team we were expected to beat.

Italy at that point was down but not out, but from then on we would have to get serious and play hard! Norway who had eliminated England was not going to be easy and this we all knew so bearing this in mind we would have to be at our best to beat them. Norway, who had qualified after a very long absence from the world cup scene. This however was for another day though same stadium.

Soccer Hobby

Saturday, September 18, 2010

Soccer is one of the most popular sports, if not the most popular sport or hobby in the world. The soccer World Cup, which is the world soccer tournament that goes occurs every four years, gets more viewers than any other sporting event in the world. Soccer is such a big deal in some countries that it has caused political tensions between nations when their teams have played against each other in the World Cup. So why is soccer such a great hobby for everyone? For one thing, it does not require much equipment to play soccer, you just need a soccer ball to kick around and a couple friends, and some sort of goal that you can use to kick the ball into. The rules are rather simple and obvious, you just kick the soccer ball around and try to kick it into the other team's goal to score, and you can't touch the soccer ball with your hands.

Kicking a soccer ball around is something that can be addicting and you can spend hours and hours doing it without getting bored. You can do different tricks with your like dribbling and or seeing how many times you can kick the soccer ball without letting it hit the ground. You can practice tricks like the bicycle where you jump and kick it sideways or kick it in the air while falling onto your back. You can do that one trick where you roll the ball with one foot onto the back of your other leg and then use that other leg to kick it forward, from behind, over your head; that's one of my favorites. It makes people think I am a good soccer player when I do that one, even though I am not.

One nice thing about soccer or a soccer hobby is that it definitely keeps you in shape with all of that running you have to do, and you have to be in pretty good shape to do well at soccer. Playing soccer is not like a light jog where you can just take it easy the whole time. You are at a full, dead sprint over and over. It's fun too, so it doesn't feel like you are just working out, you are playing a game instead. The last soccer team I played on was an indoor soccer team. I thought I was in shape, but then I could only last for a couple minutes before I had to take a breather, each time I went in.

One of my earliest memories of playing soccer was when I was on a little league soccer team as a kid. I was playing defense and all I did was kick the ball as hard as I could to the other end of the field every time it came to me. I also remember afterwards, I ate a piece of chocolate candy with the wrapper still on it. I didn't swallow it, but it made me sick and had to quit dribbling my soccer ball on the way home from the soccer game, while I puked because the feeling in my mouth was so disgusting. I think my body was worked up from the sprinting in the soccer game as well and my stomach was tight. It still makes me sick to think about that experience all of these years later. But I sure had fun as a kid playing on my soccer team and had a lot of good experiences. I also still have a lot of good memories from my soccer days as a kid. It was fun being the center of attention as I kicked the ball around each time it came to me. I wasn't that good though, and I played defense, so I usually just gave the soccer ball a nice boot to the other side of the field each time it came to me.

There are a lot of drills you can do with a soccer balls, just on your own to become a better soccer player. You can just practice dribbling, as mentioned above, where you just kick the soccer ball back and forth between your legs as you run. Once you get good at dribbling the soccer ball, you can show it off when you play games, but dribbling the soccer ball and cutting past people. Or, you can practice kicking and aiming the soccer ball at a certain point on a wall or practice kicking it into the goal or passing with the side of you foot, so you can get your aim better and score more goals when you play. You can dribble the soccer ball with your feet while weaving through cones. You can practice heading the soccer ball and aiming with your head. For some reason soccer player's favorite thing to do is hit the soccer ball with their heads.

How to Play Soccer - The Fundamentals

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Bill Shankly (the former Liverpool manager) once said

"Soccer is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, on controlling the ball and making yourself available to receive a pass"

It sounds quite simple really doesn't, but:

What are the rules of soccer?
How do the rules of soccer influence how to play soccer?
What specific skills are required?
What tactics should be employed?
What are the physical attributes needed by soccer players?
Do soccer players need specific fitness requirements?
What should I learn first?
What formation is the best one for a team to use?

What to do First

When you are learning how to play soccer, then the very first thing that you should do is ensure that you develop great technical skill.  Getting technical skill can only be done through a lot of practise and repetition of various soccer drills.  Whilst teamwork and tactics play a huge part in the way a team plays, the teams performance will be limited based on the technical ability of the players and the level of skill that players have.

The basic skills that are required for soccer player are:

Ball Control
Dribbling
Passing
Shooting
Heading
Defending
Goalkeeping

To ensure that you have good soccer skills, a great deal of practice is required to develop good soccer skills a great deal of practice and commitment is required. The key to developing great soccer skills is repetition.  I recommend that players do at least 30 minutes a day of solid practice to develop these skills, including juggling a soccer ball to ensure that their technical ability is of an adequate standard.

Tactics and formations

Teamwork is vital in playing soccer and having a good understanding of how to get into goal scoring positions and conversely how a team can defend against the opposition requires an intimate knowledge of the game and of how to get players to play using different soccer formations.

Soccer Fitness

Being Fit for Soccer does have a major impact on how to play soccer.  I was in a team once that had limited technical ability compared with the majority of teams in our league, but guess what we were runners up in the league purely because we were the fittest team in the league and often won games in the dying minutes, because we were fit enough to "run the opposition off their legs".  So never underestimate the impact that fitness will have on your game.

Rules of Soccer

There are various forms of soccer, ranging from micro soccer (3 a side) to the standard game of 11 a side. FIFA are the worldwide governing body for soccer, and it is FIFA who control the laws of the game that dictate how to play soccer from a rules perspective.  Understanding the laws of the game does have a bearing on what you do, and all players should make sure they understand the laws of the game.

A combination of learning the soccer skills described here, team tactics and team formations, soccer fitness and an understanding of the laws of the game constitute the basics of how to play soccer.

See some more of Nigels articles, or his website for more details information on how to play soccer.

History of Soccer in Brazil

Image : http://www.flickr.com

History of soccer in Brazil began during the late 19th century when the game of soccer was introduced to the country. Since its introduction, it has never wavered as the nation's top sport of all time. The Brazilians fell in love with the game and the rest is history as they say. During 1888, in the city of Sau Paulo, the very first sports club was formed. It was named as the Sau Paulo Athletics Club and then soccer was thoroughly introduced to people. After some years, 1914 to be exact, the Brazilian Football Confederation was established and soccer became a popular and nationwide sport that displayed fun for the Brazilians.

When one talks of Brazil, one of the most common things that come to mind is soccer. The sea of yellow among the crowd in the World Cup has almost been a constant reminder of Brazil's greatness and historical richness when it comes to the sport. Today's players like Ronaldo, Rivario. Rivaldo and Ronaldinho emerged from the inspirations of their country's all-time greats. Their goal for today is to match the greatness that their predecessors have created throughout the years.

Soccer's impact on Brazil reflected on their culture. The majority of children in Brazil grew up playing with a soccer ball and idolizing soccer superstars from their own backyard. One of these superstars is Pele. Pele is arguably the best soccer player to have ever played the game and the most recognizable soccer figure during his prime and even after it. Pele helped Brazil to win World Cups and soccer definitely put Brazil on the world map. The history of soccer in Brazil summarizes the people's passion, dedication and love for the sport, more than any other country in the world.

Top 10 Soccer Goals

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Selecting the top 10 soccer goals is tough but check out the list below of 10 great soccer world cup goals.

1. Carlos Alberto (Brazil)

Brazil vs Italy (4-1) 1970

This goal was a fitting end to the world cup winners Brazil campaign as they swept from one end of the park to the other without an Italian touching the ball. And the goal was scored in a world cup final !

2. Saeed Owairan (Saudi Arabia)

Saudi Arabia vs Belgium (1-0) in 1994

Known as the Maradona of the Arabs, I remember watching his amazing run form his own half and thinking he would be tackled but somehow he beat about 5 players and scored !

3. Diego Maradona ( Argentina )

Argentina vs England (2-1) in 1986

Many soccer fans argue that this is the greatest ever goal as Maradona ran over 50 yards beating several English defenders and rounding the keepe to slot home. Maradona also scored the infamous " hand of god " goal in this game.

4. Pelé (Brazil)

Brazil vs Italy (4-1) in 1970

Pele scored with a brilliant header and this was the 100th Brazil goal in the world cup. His amazing leap to win the header illustrated what a great player Pele was.

5. Roberto Baggio (Italy)

Italy vs Czechoslovakia (2-0) in 1990

Baggio was a class player and he went on a mazy run beating several players to cooly slot home a great individual goal. All was forgiven for that ponytail !

6. Dennis Bergkamp (Holland)

Holland vs Argentina (2-1) in 1998

Bergkamp always shows great skill and he showed majestic control to bring the ball down and beat a defender in one turn before slotting home.

7. Diego Maradona (Argentina)

Argentina vs Belgium (2-0) in 1986

There is no doubt that Maradona virtually won the world cup with his brillaint displays in 1986 . Four Belgians were left for dead with pace and strength before Maradona slotted the ball home past goalkeeper Pfaff.

8. Archie Gemmill (Scotland)

Scotland vs Holland (3-1) in 1978

This goal was voted goal of the tournament in the 1978 world cup finals. Gemmill beat three Dutch defenders including a cheeky nutmeg before chipping past the keeper with his left foot. Class goal !

9. David Narey (Scotland)

Brazil vs Italy (4-1) in 1982

Ok you can tell I support Scotland but I always remember this superb goal that put Scotland 1-0 up, unfortunately Brazil stepped up a gear and turned on the style to win 4-1 !

10. Manuel Negrete (Mexico)

Mexico vs Bulgaria (1-0) in 1986

This was truly a magnificent goal. An acrobatic and well executed scissor kick volley from outside the penalty area. Many youngsters would try and copy this goal over the years !

No doubt we will have a few more top soccer goals to add after the 2006 world cup in Germany.

Sports Authority 25 Percent Off Coupons Are a Great Deal

Sports Authority, for me, is the best place to get sports equipment and they are known for offering 25% off coupons all the time. They cater to those in need of equipment for a variety of sports including basketball, soccer, and even paintball. Since I am an avid golfer, this is where I always get my golfing equipment. I still remember the time when I bought my first golf clubs set.

I went into the store without a clue on how to go about making my purchase. I must have looked as clueless as I felt because one of the salespersons immediately approached me and offered her assistance. She then led me to the golf section of the store where they had a varied selection of goods. I mentioned that I had a coupon and that I needed golf shoes with a complete set of golf clubs. She proceeded to show me a variety of choices for each thing that I wanted, and was patient enough to answer my probably ridiculous questions about the sport.

After around 30 minutes of glove wearing, shoe fitting, and club swinging, I finally ended up deciding on my purchases. For my shoes, I bought a pair of Nikes to match my dri-fit polo, and for my golf clubs set, a brand new shiny Callaway X-20 set. I was very pleased that I was able to find everything I needed in such a short time and all in one place. Also, the price was very reasonable as compared to other sporting goods stores.

2010 NFL Predictions - Arizona Cardinals

Friday, September 10, 2010

The Arizona Cardinals have enjoyed plenty of success the last two seasons, winning back-to-back division titles and four playoff games.  However, they did that with future Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner under center.  With Warner calling it a career in the offseason, it will now be up to Matt Leinart to keep the Cards atop the NFC West.  And NFL lines makes don't have faith that he can get the job done.  The books have listed the Cardinals behind the San Francisco 49ers at +250 to win the NFC West.  They have also set Arizona's regular season wins number at over/under 7.5 wins.

Offense: Leinart will get the first crack at replacing Warner. If he doesn't perform up to Ken Whisenhunt's standards, we will likely see Derek Anderson.

Leinart will have plenty of weapons and an improved offensive line to help him succeed. Arizona has brought perennial Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca aboard to steady the line. The Cards want to improve their running attack, and Whisenhunt, who coached Faneca in Pittsburgh, believes his new guard is just the guy to do it. Whisenhunt also knows that a stronger running game will take the pressure off of Leinart.

If running backs Beanie Wells and Timothy Hightower receive adequate blocking, I believe they can put up some big numbers. This duo combined for nearly 1,400 yards and 15 scores on the ground last season. With Arizona expected to put a bigger emphasis on its running game, Wells might be a nice fantasy sleeper.

The Cards will miss physical wide receiver Anquan Boldin, but they still have plenty of big play ability with Larry Fitzgerald, Steve Breaston and Early Doucet. Fitzgerald is as good as they get in the NFL. He has recorded more than 1,000 receiving yards and double-digit touchdowns each of the last three seasons.

Defense: The Cards were a very mediocre defensive team in 2009. They ranked No. 15 in the NFL in scoring defense, giving up 20.3 points per game, and No. 20 in total defense, allowing 346.4 yards per game.

Arizona will have its work cut out for itself as it tries to improve on those numbers now that it has lost quality performers like Karlos Dansby and Antrel Rolle.

The Cardinals have tried to make up for these losses by bringing in Joey Porter and Kerry Rhodes. They also added nose tackle Dan Williams and linebacker Daryl Washington in the draft.

With veteran pass rushers Bertrand Berry and Chike Okeafor no longer in the desert, the Cards are hoping that Porter can keep their pass rush elite. Arizona finished No. 6 in the NFL with 43 sacks last season.

Prediction: 3rd NFC West - In order for Arizona to win the NFC West for a third straight season, Leinart will have to play much better than he has to this point in his career. While I don't think Leinart will be a complete bust, he's not Warner, and he likely never will be. The Cards relied on their offense to carry the load the past two seasons, but there's a good chance the offense won't be as explosive in 2010. Be sure to check out my 2010 NFL predictions to see which team I have winning the NFC West.

Review - Learn to Play The Brazilian Way DVD

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

As the old saying goes "the English pioneered football whereas the Brazilians reinvented the game". In this case, it's true and time and time again we've witnessed the great Brazilians displaying eye-catching soccer tricks and skills along with slick passing movements and clinical finishing. Even I myself would've love to watch at least one of the Brazilian player such as Ronaldinho in a soccer match.

Fortunately, this DVD came right after Brazil won their fifth World Cup in 2002. The DVD is guided by Simon Clifford, one of the most influential person in development of the soccer game especially in the UK.

Pop-in the DVD into your DVD player or PC and you'll see menus featuring Play, Skill Selection and Extras. The DVD is easier to navigate with it's user-friendly interface and particularly on soccer skills selection which in my opinion the most addictive section.

Play

The very first time I watched this DVD is by going through all the sections from soccer skills to soccer juggling tricks and finally the interviews.

Skill Selection

This is undeniably my favourite section featuring all the world-known soccer skills and tricks performed by the greats like Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Juninho and more. Simon guided a group of youngsters by explaining each skills step-by-step and also shown in real-time ( e.g. Ronaldo's step over on the group stage World Cup match against Costa Rica ) from the World Cup 2002 footage.

Brazilian Soccer Tricks and Skills

One of the great features of this DVD is that Simon shows on doing the soccer skills and applying it against a defender. One of my favourite skills, the Ronaldo step-over ( though some people may refer as the "Rainbow" step-over ) for example, is shown and are broken-down into simple steps.

Applying the soccer trick against a defender is also explained clearly by Simon including the timing of execution of the soccer skill.

Brazilian Juggling Skills and Tricks

Simon Clifford encourage the kids to juggle and hone their soccer juggling skills in a group of circle. Each kids display various soccer flick-ups and juggling techniques. The best part of this is that it encourage the kids to share their soccer skills and enjoyment in soccer.

Passing, Long Ball and Shooting Skills

Simon teaches the kids on various passing, long ball and shooting techniques. He even showed one of the famous long ball technique which Pele called as the "falling leaf" technique used by Ronaldinho in the free kick against England in the World Cup 2002.

The kids also have the chance to shoot one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The drill is simply routine practice to improve your shooting abilities and one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

My Recommendation

The DVD is great for football or soccer players and also for freestyle soccer players as well. The soccer skills, drills and tricks are build around the Brazilian environment which include factors such as mentality. A Brazilian rhythm music is suitable during each drill along with the quality of the sounds are clear.

The only downside for this DVD is the lack of slow-motion feature which I'm disappointed at especially when learning Ronaldinho's elastico. I had to rewind and play it at slow motion which becomes annoying after a while.

Overall the DVD is great for those who really wants to learn and play like the Brazilian way as it equips with proper mentality and various soccer skills and tricks applied during any situations of a soccer match.
