Johannesburg: this large metropolitan area is not generally considered a tourist destination in the sense that Cape Town, Kruger National Park or the coastal towns are. However, Johannesburg may be a fascinating stop on some South Africa holidays itineraries because it is a fine example a modern, prosperous city. Some of the tallest buildings on the continent are to be found in the city.
Going Green
Mixed in with the "big city" feel are the wonderful parks and gardens maintained by the municipal parks department. In fact, Johannesburg has become known as one of the greenest cities in the world due to the number of trees planted in recent years. Johannesburg Botanical Garden draws many visitors as well.
Getting Sporty
If there is one area of activity that does rate inclusion in South Africa holidays it is sports. A number of clubs compete in the Premier Soccer League as well as in National First Division. Of course, South Africa was the host country for FIFA World Cup 2010, an event that truly put Johannesburg and South Africa on the business and economic radar. The classic game of cricket is still quite popular here. The city hosted the 2003 Cricket World Cup Final.
Art, Culture, and Other Treasures
Travellers who visit Johannesburg as a "jumping off" point to another area might want to investigate some of the hidden treasures here. Newly established history museums and the excellent Johannesburg Zoo should be on the South Africa holidays list along with a visit to Gold Reef City, a massive amusement park near the city centre. World-class art is one of the treasures of Johannesburg. There are several excellent museums, including the Johannesburg Art Gallery. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Cradle of Humankind, is just a few miles away. The site is known as the location for the first adult Australopithecus africanus and is considered the world's best hominid site.
Stay in Comfort
As you plan your South Africa holidays and include Johannesburg on the itinerary you will be happy to know that four-star and five-star hotels abound in this great city. For example, if you fly in you may want to settle in at the Airport Sun Intercontinental, a five-star hotel with world-class service. D'Oreale Grande Emperors Palace is a five-star hotel, casino and convention resort that is well-known for its busy casino and outstanding service. Among the high-quality amenities are an art gallery, business centre, gym/health spa, helipad and swimming pool with a pool bar.
Another great option for fine accommodations is Fairlawns Boutique Hotel, which opened in 1998. Visitors often remark that the Highveld setting causes them to forget they are in the heart of a great city. This new addition to Johannesburg has already garnered a number of platinum and diamond awards for excellence and also received the Diners Club "Wine List of the Year" award. Guests are treated to the finest in personal service in the hotel's spa.
So, if a visit to one of the world's modern, exciting cities is on your wish list, why not include Johannesburg when planning your South Africa holidays.
